Increasing pressure through marketing campaigns on diesel cars leads to a loss of their popularity with drivers. The result is a higher number of electric cars sold compared to diesel, in 2021. The best-selling vehicle in the first eight months in Europe is the Dacia Sandero.
According to JATO Europe, 56% of the total number of vehicles sold are petrol, 21% (151,737) are electric (EV and PHEV) vehicles, while 20% are diesel vehicles. This is not the best month of electrified vehicle sales, but it was still enough to achieve a significant jump in market share.
In the first eight months of this year, 8,095,419 cars were sold in Europe, which is a million more than last year. When it comes to electric vehicles, 1.32 million electrified vehicles have been sold by September this year. That is more than 158,300 vehicles sold, compared to the same period last year.
Speaking of the best-selling electric cars this year, the top three positions are held by VW ID.3, Tesla Model 3 and VW ID.4. When it comes to plug-in hybrids, the Ford Kuga retained first place in August, followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the BMW 3 Series.
The surprise, for some, is that the Dacia Sandero is the best-selling car in Europe for the second month in a row. The second is the VW Golf, while the top five best-selling cars in Europe close with the Toyota Yaris, Dacia Duster and VW T-Roc.
