Australia is the first country in the world to have Photoluminescent (Glow in the dark) linemarking. It is part of a project that should help drivers in conditions of reduced visibility. The project will cost Australian citizens around AUD 245 million.
The Australian Government is trying to use Photoluminescent paint to enable drivers easier traffic but also faster reaction in certain conditions which may appear on the road. The project envisages the application of paint on some roads in the state of Victoria, and the work will be done by Tarmac Linemarking in cooperation with OmniGrip and Vic Roads. The first photos were posted on the Facebook profile of Tarmac Linemarking where you can see what the road with Photoluminescent linemarking looks like.
The Australian government’s decision has its opponents. Some of them think that maintenance will be too expensive, and they cite the need for frequent color renewal as the reason. Others believe that the paint contains hazardous materials and has a detrimental effect on the environment. There are also those who state as reasons that some drivers will want to turn off the lights.
Either way, this decision needs to be checked first, and time will tell if it was the right one.
