For months, spy photographers have been tracking a mysterious low-slung Jaguar Land Rover prototype that many believed would become the next-generation Range Rover Velar. However, the British automaker has now confirmed that the sleek test vehicle was not a Velar replacement at all. Instead, it previews an entirely new model: the Range Rover GT, the fifth member of the modern Range Rover family.
Positioned as a high-end electric grand tourer with SUV capability, the Range Rover GT represents one of the most significant expansions of the Range Rover brand in decades. Unlike traditional Range Rover models focused primarily on luxury SUVs and off-road ability, the GT introduces a new formula: lower proportions, dramatic coupe-inspired styling, electric performance, and long-distance comfort.
The new model will launch initially with a fully electric powertrain before later receiving a hybrid option, giving Range Rover a direct competitor in the rapidly growing luxury electric performance crossover segment.
Range Rover GT Will Not Replace the Velar
Despite early speculation, the Range Rover GT is not the successor to the current Range Rover Velar. Jaguar Land Rover confirmed that the Velar will continue production unchanged for the foreseeable future, while the GT will exist as a completely separate model within the Range Rover lineup.
The new vehicle is built on JLR’s flexible EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform, which was developed specifically for next-generation electric vehicles. The architecture will also underpin future models from Jaguar as the company moves toward a fully electric luxury portfolio.
The Range Rover GT’s development also highlights the growing technical connection between Range Rover and the reborn Jaguar brand, with several design elements clearly inspired by the upcoming Jaguar Type 01.
A Lower, Sportier Range Rover with Coupe-Like Proportions
From the outside, the Range Rover GT immediately separates itself from existing Range Rover models. While it carries familiar design cues from the Range Rover Sport, including a slim front fascia, sharply styled headlights, and a minimalist grille treatment, its proportions are completely different.
The GT sits noticeably lower than the Range Rover Sport and adopts a dramatic fastback-style roofline that gives it the appearance of a luxury coupe rather than a traditional SUV.
The design appears aimed at combining the elegance of a grand touring coupe with the commanding presence of a Range Rover. Its long hood, short overhangs, aerodynamic profile, and muscular stance create a unique silhouette unlike anything previously offered by the brand.
This approach places the Range Rover GT in a new category alongside vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, BMW XM, and future electric luxury models from European competitors.
Interior: The Most Radical Range Rover Cabin Ever Created
Inside, the Range Rover GT represents the biggest design departure from traditional Range Rover interiors.
The cabin shares clear visual DNA with the upcoming Jaguar Type 01, featuring a futuristic steering wheel design with thick horizontal spokes and integrated touch-sensitive controls. The airbag placement beneath the center section creates a unique appearance rarely seen in production vehicles.
Behind the steering wheel are paddle controls similar to those expected in Jaguar’s next-generation models, while a slim digital display functions as the driver information screen.
A large central infotainment display dominates the dashboard, positioned above a floating center console that creates a minimalist, open cabin atmosphere.
The result is a completely new interpretation of Range Rover luxury. Instead of relying on traditional wood, leather, and classic SUV design elements, the GT embraces a more technology-focused approach aimed at attracting younger luxury buyers.
Four Seats First, Five Seats Later
At launch, the Range Rover GT will be offered as a four-seat luxury grand tourer, emphasizing comfort and exclusivity rather than maximum practicality.
However, Range Rover has confirmed that a five-seat configuration with a conventional second-row bench will become available later, expanding the vehicle’s appeal to customers who need additional passenger capacity.
This strategy mirrors the approach used by premium manufacturers that offer both performance-focused and practical versions of their flagship models.
Electric Performance Meets Range Rover Comfort
While technical specifications have not yet been fully revealed, Range Rover has confirmed that the GT will debut exclusively as an electric vehicle.
The EMA platform was designed around advanced electric powertrains, meaning the GT is expected to offer strong acceleration, impressive driving range, and ultra-fast charging capability.
Unlike many performance-focused electric SUVs that prioritize speed above everything else, Range Rover is positioning the GT around the concept of the ultimate long-distance luxury machine.
According to Range Rover CEO Martin Limpert, the GT will redefine the grand touring segment by combining elegant proportions, exciting driving dynamics, exceptional comfort, and capabilities that traditional GT vehicles cannot match.
