The 2027 Hyundai Tucson has been caught in one of the most dramatic development incidents of the year. During a demanding brake durability test in the Austrian Alps, Hyundai engineers reportedly pushed the next-generation SUV so hard that the front brakes began smoking, one brake briefly caught fire, and both front tires eventually burst from the heat.

The incident may be embarrassing for Hyundai’s development team, but it also provides one of the clearest looks yet at the next-generation Hyundai Tucson, which appears to be undergoing a major transformation both inside and out ahead of its expected 2027 or possibly 2028 model-year debut.
Hyundai Tucson brake test ends in smoke, fire, and blown tires
According to our spy photographer, Hyundai engineers were conducting a severe mountain brake test while towing a trailer through steep Alpine roads. The goal was to evaluate the braking system under extreme thermal loads, but the test appears to have exceeded the prototype’s limits.

Witnesses reported thick smoke pouring from one front wheel before the overheated brake ignited. Support vehicles rushed to the scene and used multiple fire extinguishers in an effort to contain the flames. The heat buildup was so intense that it transferred into the wheels and tires, causing both front tires to burst one after the other.
Once the tires failed, the Tucson prototype was left stranded on the roadside and had to be recovered rather than driven away. While such extreme testing is designed to expose weaknesses before production begins, this particular result was far more dramatic than the typical engineering debrief.

A tougher, boxier 2027 Hyundai Tucson design
The mechanical mishap may grab headlines, but the prototype itself is arguably the bigger story. The new Hyundai Tucson looks substantially different from the current model, abandoning its sharply creased, busy styling in favor of a much more upright and rugged appearance.
