ZF Lifetec developed an airbag for the foot

Car airbags were first developed in the early 1950s, with the first patent filed by John W. Hetrick in 1953. They became commercially available in the 1970s and were widely adopted in the 1980s and 1990s. Modern vehicles can have up to 10 or more airbags, including front, side, curtain, knee, and rear airbags, depending on the model and safety features. The German company ZF Lifetec introduced the Active Heel Airbag, an air bag for the foot.

A large part of the impact energy is transmitted through the femur, the strongest bone in the human body. However, tests have shown that when the seat is tilted backwards, the distance between the heel and the support increases and the connection with the floor is no longer optimal, requiring an additional point of support for the heel.

The Active Heel Airbag reduces the risk of foot injury by allowing the knee to hit the air bag at an optimal angle, maximizing its protective function. In the normal seating position, the vehicle floor provides sufficient support for the feet of the driver and front passenger, ensuring a stable support point for the heels and a controlled knee path. However, tests have shown that when the seat is tilted back, the resistance to the feet increases, so additional support is needed.

The Active Heel Airbag is integrated directly into the footwell and in the event of a collision, the airbag inflates under the floor mat. The system can be adapted to almost any car model and will be available to car manufacturers from 2028.

Cybertruck Covers magnetic foils can change color

In 2022, BMW introduced the iX Flow concept, which uses E Ink technology to change the color of the body. It is a foil that contains millions of E Ink microcapsules. Each capsule is filled with negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Now Tesla has also offered a similar option for the Cybertruck.

Covering a car with foil can be expensive and often poorly done. That’s why the company Cybertruck Covers has produced magnetic foils that can be installed and removed in just a few minutes, which is much simpler than the current offer. They can be in different colors, can be used multiple times and are easy to install at home, without the need for special tools. However, these foils also have a negative side, which is exposed edges.

Magnetic foils are designed to be easily installed on flat and unpainted stainless steel panels, and their surface is ideal for good adhesion, which means they are stable both in place and at higher speeds. Cybertruck Covers has prepared a wide range of colors that include white, steel, black, blue, green, desert, gold, rose gold, copper, orange, red and even a color-changing option.

The magnetic films are not yet available, and will cost $ 2,000. It should also be noted that buyers can only choose one film for the front panel, which costs $ 195.

Volkswagen added 2.0-L TSI option for Tiguan, Tayron and Passat

Volkswagen has expanded its 4MOTION lineup with two versions of the 2.0-liter TSI engine. These engines will be available in the Tiguan, Tayron and Passat.

The 4MOTION system uses a multi-plate clutch to connect the rear axle. In city driving on dry roads, power is only transmitted to the front wheels, which saves fuel. The rear axle is engaged when the load increases or power is lost. The driver can also engage all-wheel drive manually if necessary.

The 2.0-liter TSI engine delivers 204 hp (152 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque, or 265 hp (197 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque (available only with the R-Line). The Passat is only available with the 265 hp option.

Volkswagen has also added a new Trailer Mode, which is activated automatically, allowing the Tiguan and Passat to tow up to 2,200 kilograms, while the Tayron has increased its towing capacity to 2,500 kilograms.

When it comes to price, buyers who opt for the Tiguan with a TSI engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive will pay 48,200 euros, while this option for the Tayron costs 50,800 euros. Those who opt for the Passat with a TSI engine and 4MOTION will pay 62,990 euros.
