2008 Tyrrell P34 is up for auction

In 1975, the American racing team Tyrrell Racing Organization introduced the strangest Formula 1 car ever produced, the Tyrrell P34. It is a six-wheeler that proved successful in its first season and led other teams to start thinking about designing their own six-wheeled platforms. However, in 1978, the project was abandoned and Formula 1 stipulated that cars must have four wheels. One example of this car, the 2008 Tyrrell P34 will be auctioned.

The car is owned by former motor racing driver Jody Scheckter, Formula 1 champion in the 1979 season. He is the only driver from the continent of Africa to have won a Formula One race or the World Drivers’ Championship. In his 8-year career (1972-1980), he achieved 10 victories, 33 podiums, 3 pole positions and 5 fastest laps.

The Tyrrell P34 was designed by Derek Gardner, Tyrrell’s chief designer. He believed that the car could have smaller wheels under the wings, while another pair of wheels would compensate for the reduced contact surface of the smaller ones. His plan was also to reduce air resistance compared to rivals that used larger tires. Also, he thought that additional wheels would enable better braking, which did not prove to be a good solution on the track.

“The braking should have been better and it was on the straights, but as soon as you turned, the little wheels would slip and you would have to let off the pedal, so there was no advantage,” Scheckter previously told Motor Sport.

The cockpit is designed so that through transparent panels the driver can better position the car in turns, see the tires and monitor their consumption.

The Tyrrell P34 is powered by a Ford-Cosworth DFV 3.0-liter V8 engine with over 475 hp (354 kW) @10,000 rpm.

The car will be auctioned in Monaco on May 11, 2024 and the estimated value is between €450,000 – €650,000 EUR.

This 356B Super 90 is powered by a FAT Performance-sourced 2,650cc flat-four that was installed two years ago. The car left the factory in Heron Gray and at the beginning of the century, Emory Motorsports converted it into a racing car, and repainted it in a shade of blue. The fenders have been removed, and the equipment includes LED teardrop taillights, mirrors faired into the fenders, white roundels, outlaw-style door handles, leather bonnet straps, Koni Classic shocks, four-wheel disc brakes, and an Emory Outlaw badge on the decklid.

In 1951, Porsche introduced the Pre-A version of its first production car, the 356, with 1,300 and 1,500 cc engines, more power, and a split window. It was produced until 1955, when it was replaced by version 356 A. Over 4,500 examples left the production line and one of them, the 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A is up for auction.

The 356 Pre-A is powered by a replacement 1,500cc flat-four engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, fitted with BBBC gears, that sends power to the rear wheels. The car sits on 16″ steel wheels wrapped in 5.00-16″ Excelsior radial tires.

The car is finished in Maroon (R 503) and is in good condition. It is equipped with slim body-color bumpers, Reutter-Stuttgart badging, Bosch headlights, a Hella third brake light and square taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and four-wheel drum brakes with cooling ribs.

Inside, Fibersteel Speedster-style seats are trimmed in gray vinyl with cloth inserts, and gray squareweave carpets cover the seat backs and floors. In front of the driver are a banjo-style steering wheel and a five-digit odometer showing 22,762 kilometers (total mileage unknown). Additional equipment includes map pockets, black sun visors, black rubber floor linings, and a six-volt Telefunken AM/SW tube radio. There are also wooden decorations that adorn the door caps and rear panels, while ivory-finished vehicle control knobs accent the dashboard.

The car is offered as part of the Gruppe P Part IV collection on dealer consignment in California with hand-written notes, a Karosserie Reutter Certificate of Production, a copy of the Kardex, and a Montana title.
