1987 Ford RS500 Cosworth sold for £590,500

At the 1985 Geneva Motor Show Ford unveiled the Sierra RS Cosworth, which was produced in 5,545 units. Two years later Aston Martin Tickford was signed for the job of converting the 500 cars into RS500 Cosworth. One of them was sold at Silverstone Auctions for £590,500.

Compared to the standard RS Cosworth, the RS500 received a more powerful engine with a larger turbocharger and intercooler, a thicker block and a different set of nozzles, slightly different design and aerodynamic elements. The RS500 Cosworth is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 224 hp (167 kW) and 204 lb-ft (277 Nm) of torque.

There were many interested bidders, but the luckiest, or should we say, the most persistent, made the highest bid. The car was expected to fetch £180,000 but sold for more than three times that amount. As a reminder, in 1987 the car cost less than £20,000.

1987 Ford RS500 Cosworth is in outstanding and original condition. The clock shows 5,000 miles (just over 8,000 kilometers).
