Mercedes will not abandon the S-Class with ICE

Mercedes is definitely not giving up on the S-Class with internal combustion engines, although an all-electric version of Mercedes’ most luxurious sedan is expected to arrive soon, in 2026.

According to the statements of the Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Ola Källenius, the company has already invested a lot of money in the development of new internal combustion engines that will come in the new generation. He also announced the arrival of an all-electric version that will be built on a new platform that is also used by the EQS model.

“Given that the S-Class represents the top of our offer and the best that customers can get for their money today, we have invested more, because we are not ready to make the compromise that we would have to make if the conventional and electrically powered versions were based on the same platform, which would ultimately had a negative impact on the offer of cabin and engine space,” says Källenius.

In August, Mercedes announced that it will put EQS and S-Class under one name. The reason is lower demand for these cars. “In the future, there will be two S-Classes, one with ICE and one with electric drive,” said Mercedes director Ola Kallenius. This means that buyers will have more choice, as with the G-Class which is offered with internal combustion engines and as all-electric.

Mercedes is replacing the EQS with the new S-Class

Mercedes-Benz recently announced that it will reduce production of its S-Class, and the reason is lower demand for these cars. The intention is to move to single-shift work, which will affect almost 1,500 employees, while some of them will be redeployed to other production sectors at the Sindelfingen plant. The German manufacturer now has a new plan, to put EQS and S-Class under one name.

Mercedes will not give up on internal combustion engines, at least not until the end of the decade. “In the future, there will be two S-Classes, one with ICE and one with electric drive,” said Mercedes director Ola Kallenius. This means that buyers will have more choice, as with the G-Class which is offered with internal combustion engines and as all-electric.

This is not a surprise, because sales of electric vehicles are not going according to the manufacturer’s plan. In the year 2023, Mercedes sold over 2 million cars worldwide, and it was expected that 20% of them would be electric cars, but that did not happen. Customers are increasingly turning to gasoline and diesel cars, as well as hybrids.

In Q2 2024, Mercedes sold just 33,400 cars from its S-Class (EQS, EQS SUV and GLS), which is a drop of 25 percent compared to 44,200 cars sold in the same period last year. The biggest decline was recorded in the markets of Europe (-27 percent), USA (-19 percent) and China (-13 percent).

It seems that customers are not making the switch to electric cars easily, even though the number of electric cars on European roads has increased by 2% in 2024.

Mercedes EQE 350

The Mercedes EQE 350 is a model based on an electrical architecture developed specifically for electric vehicles.

After the Mercedes EQS AMG model, which we wrote about earlier, at the IAA Munich Mercedes will unveil its sports sedan, the EQE 350. It is a car with a short wheelbase equipped with a new larger grille, redesigned headlights with LED accents.

Inside, the first thing drivers will notice is a full-length MBUX Hyperscreen with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a central 17.7-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch passenger-side screen. The sports seats are upholstered in fake leather, which can be seen on the steering wheel and doors.

The Mercedes EQE is powered by an electric motor with 290 hp (215 kW) and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm) of torque. It has rear-wheel drive, while the 4Matic all-wheel drive will be available as an option. The engine is powered by a 90.6 kWh battery pack that gives the vehicle a range of 410 miles (660 kilometers). Thanks to the fast charging, the battery can be charged up to 80 percent in just 31 minutes.

Thanks to the adjustable suspension, the car can reduce its height by 1 inch at speeds less than 75 mph (120 km / h). It will reach 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph (210 km / h). It will ride on 19-inch wheels, and 21-inch and 22-inch wheels will be optional.
