Volkswagen has announced that the hatchback and Wagon versions of the recently introduced Golf R are ready for official presentation and production. The teaser was published on the Instagram profile “volkswagen_r” and shows both versions in the blue camouflage that we also saw on the Golf R.
The hatchback comes with several visual changes compared to the R model, such as redesigned LED headlights and taillights, as well as redesigned bumpers. The interior will also be upgraded with a new 12.9-inch screen infotainment system, illuminated sliders and buttons on the steering wheel, as is the case with other updated versions of the Golf. The Golf R Variant will also undergo some changes, and will only be available in Europe and the UK.
When it comes to the powertrain, VW has not yet published technical specifications. The current Golf R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-L TSI four-cylinder engine with 320 hp (239 kW), respectively 333 hp (248 kW) in the “20 Years” and “333” special versions. It remains to be seen whether the redesigned version will get a bit more power and come closer to its competitors. The engine will be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
