VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Is One of the Fastest FWD Cars at the Nürburgring

Volkswagen‘s new GTI Edition 50 has made headlines by becoming one of the fastest front-wheel-drive cars ever to lap Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. With blistering speed and precision engineering, the special edition hot hatch celebrates five decades of GTI performance — and it almost made history.

But as close as it came, the GTI Edition 50 didn’t quite clinch the top spot. That title still belongs to the formidable Honda Civic Type R, which completed the Green Hell in a stunning 7 minutes 44.881 seconds, securing its position as the king of FWD Nürburgring lap times. Also ahead of the GTI is the Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R, the lightweight French hot hatch that clocked a 7:45.399 lap — a testament to its stripped-down, track-focused design.

Volkswagen’s performance shows the GTI Edition 50 is just seconds away from reclaiming FWD supremacy. While the exact lap time has not been officially released, sources confirm it’s marginally behind its Japanese and French rivals.

So, the question now is: will VW return to the ‘Ring in pursuit of those final two seconds? With the 50th anniversary badge adding symbolic weight and fans eager for a comeback, a renewed attempt seems not only possible but likely. After all, in the world of hot hatches and Nürburgring bragging rights, every millisecond matters.

BMW M4 CSL at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

Late last year, BMW unveiled a limited edition of its new racing car, the BMW M4 CSL. It is a track monster, a powerful car, and everyone was waiting to see its capabilities on the most famous race track, the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The BMW M4 CSL is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 550 hp (404 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Auto Steptronic transmission. It reaches 60 mph in 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 191 mph (307 km/h).

Testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife was done by the German magazine Sport Auto. Behind the steering wheel was journalist and magazine test driver Christian Gebhardt, who completed the 20.6-kilometer course in seven minutes and 17,080 seconds. As a reminder, on the same track last year BMW team driver Jörg Weidinger achieved a lap time of 7:15.677. This means that the M4 CSL currently holds the best lap time at the Nürburgring among BMW’s road-legal models.

The car will be produced in only 1,000 copies. Now the question is, what answer is the BMW 3.0 CSL preparing, which will be produced in 50 copies, in honor of its 50th birthday.

BMW 3.0 CSL is powered by a 3.0 L inline-six engine with 560 hp (412 kW) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

2023 Kia EV6 GT at the Nurburgring

Last month, KIA unveiled the EV6 GT, the most powerful car KIA has ever produced. This concludes the story of the Kia Stinger, which has had several upgrades since its arrival on the market in 2017. Now this fast electric car has shown its performance on the famous Nurburgring race track.

2023 Kia EV6 GT - The most powerful Kia ever produced

The EV6 GT is built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) designed for high electric vehicle power. With powerful motors on both axles and a long-range, 77.4 kWh battery, located under the flat floor of the cabin, the EV6 GT offers a spacious interior in the elegant form of a coupé-inspired crossover. Its range on a single charge is up to 206 miles / 424 km (WLTP, combined), while its 800V charging technology allows it to charge the battery very quickly from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

Kia EV6 GT is powered by a front and rear electric motor with a total power of 576 hp (424 kW) and 545 lb-ft (740 Nm) of torque. Power is transmitted to all wheels via a 1-speed automatic transmission. It reaches 60 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 161 mph (259 km/h). This means that it is not only a more powerful but also a faster car than the Stinger. It is mounted on a set of 21-inch wheels.

Driving at the Nurburgring was not aimed at breaking the record, but the very skilled driver showed that he can drift very controlled and long with the EV6 GT, but also achieve very high speed averages. Thus, for most of the circuit, the Kia EV6 GT was at speeds above 100 km/h, while on several flat and fast sections it easily reached 225 km/h.

In this test, the Kia EV6 GT showed that it will be a serious competitor to sports electric cars such as the Tesla Model 3, Model X, Audi E-Tron GT and BMW iX.
