VW Scirocco Could Come Back As All-Electric Car

Manufacturers are working hard on the electrification of their fleets, replacing some of its popular ICE models with fully electric ones. In order to keep up with the competition, some of the models that have not been on the market for years could be revived. One of them is the VW Scirocco, which, if all goes according to plan, should debut in 2028.

The Volkswagen Scirocco was first presented in 1974. The first two generations were produced between 1974 and 1992. After 16 years (in 2008), the third generation VW Scirocco arrived on the market and was produced until 2017, when VW decided to discontinue this model.

According to Autocar, VW is seriously considering bringing back the Scirocco as an electric coupe. The car would be built on the PPE platform, which it would share with the new Porsche Boxster and Cayman. Also, the new Scirocco would be powered by two electric motors (400 hp / 298 kW) with all-wheel drive. Volkswagen is also considering an option with a single electric motor of up to 300 hp (224 kW), and it could represent the brand’s benchmark when it comes to the performance of models in the R range.

Audi, as part of the VW Group, retired its 2-door sports model TT at the end of last year after 25 years. On this occasion, Audi unveiled a limited edition of this model, the Audi TT Tourist Trophy, which will be produced in only 25 copies. However, some rumors say that the TT model could still return in the future, but as a fully electric car.

VW ID.1

After VW announced at the end of last year that it was retiring its small electric city car, the VW E-Up!, chief technology officer Kai Grunitz announced that the German manufacturer is developing a new small electric model, the ID.1, which will be positioned below the electric model ID.2. It will be a good alternative for increasingly expensive larger electric cars.

The demand for electric cars is growing year by year, and manufacturers are trying in different ways to take over the growing number of undecided customers as well as those who have already decided on an EV. Of course, the price of the car plays the biggest role in the selection, and the most expensive part of the EV is the batteries. Cheaper batteries would definitely have an impact on reducing vehicle prices, and Grunitz is convinced that Volkswagen is close to achieving that.

“With our unified cell, coming in 2026, we’re really going to drive down the cost of the battery itself,” Grunitz said. He also stated: “From a technology perspective, I think we can do it. In the end, it’s a question of scalability, but it’s difficult to get a really affordable all-electric vehicle. We’re looking for cooperation partners outside the VW Group, we’ll see what happens. The car has to be profitable, but for VW this model is much more important than just profit because it represents the entrance to our brand. The first car must be accessible to the customer, because if he sits in ID.1, maybe a little later his next car will be ID.2, ID .3 or ID.4. That’s why it’s really important to have a small affordable vehicle.”

According to Grunitz, the ID.1 will not be part of the SSP family, as this platform will arrive a little later, in 2028. Therefore, they will use a different platform. Whether that means adapting the current MEB platform remains to be seen.

The VW ID.1 should reach the market by 2027.

Sketches of the revised VW Golf Mk8

At CES Las Vegas, which was held at the beginning of the month, Volkswagen showed the public a camouflaged example of the redesigned VW Golf Mk8, which should soon be premiered. Now we have official sketches of how the car should look in the end.

For now, VW has not released details about the Golf, which will undergo a redesign in all versions (basic, GTI and R). What is known for now is that the standard version will retain the manual gearbox, while the GTI will only be available with a DSG gearbox. The four-wheel drive Golf R will also be equipped with an automatic transmission and will be the last version of this model with ICE. Sketches of the revised Golf Mk8 were published on his Instagram profile by the head of Volkswagen design, Andreas Mind.

Like the rest of the VW fleet, from the end of the decade, the Golf will only be available with an electric powertrain. It will be built on the SSP platform and will be produced at the VW plant in Wolfsburg.
