The Opel Grandland Electric gains a 22-kW onboard charger, cutting AC charging times in half. Discover its range, battery options and 325-hp AWD version.

Opel Grandland Electric Gets 22-kW Charger, Cuts Charging Time in Half

Opel has introduced a 22-kW onboard charger for the Grandland Electric lineup, making its flagship electric SUV the first Opel passenger car to offer the faster AC charging technology. The upgrade cuts charging times significantly, giving the Grandland Electric, Long Range and AWD versions greater flexibility when charging at home, at work or at public charging stations.

Opel is taking another step towards making electric mobility more convenient with the introduction of a 22-kW onboard charger for its all-electric Grandland range. The new charging technology, which is now available for the Grandland Electric, Grandland Electric Long Range and Grandland Electric AWD, makes the German-built SUV the first passenger car from the brand to offer this higher AC charging capability.

While DC fast charging remains the preferred solution for drivers who need to replenish their batteries quickly during longer journeys, the upgraded onboard charger addresses another important aspect of electric vehicle ownership: everyday charging. By doubling the available AC charging capacity compared with a conventional 11-kW system, Opel promises substantially shorter charging stops wherever compatible infrastructure is available.

“With the 22-kW onboard charger in the Opel Grandland Electric, we are underlining our commitment to making electric mobility even more convenient and flexible for our customers,” said Patrick Dinger, Head of Opel Germany. He added that the Grandland combines advanced charging technology with the qualities expected from a modern all-electric SUV.

Opel Grandland Electric: 22-kW Charging Cuts Waiting Times in Half

The biggest advantage of the new 22-kW onboard charger is the reduction in charging times. According to Opel, the improvement is particularly noticeable when the vehicle is connected to an AC charging point capable of delivering the full 22 kW.

For the standard Grandland Electric and the performance-oriented Grandland Electric AWD, both equipped with a 78-kWh battery (73 kWh usable capacity), charging time drops from approximately five hours with an 11-kW charger to just over 2.5 hours.

The Grandland Electric Long Range, which features a larger 100-kWh battery (96.9 kWh usable capacity), benefits from a similar improvement. Its charging time is reduced from approximately 6.5 hours to around 3.25 hours.

These figures make the upgrade particularly relevant for drivers who regularly use workplace charging facilities or public AC charging stations. It also provides greater flexibility for overnight charging, although the actual charging speed will always depend on the power available from the charging point and the vehicle’s charging conditions.

Importantly, a 22-kW onboard charger does not mean that every AC charging station will deliver 22 kW. The charging infrastructure must support the required output for drivers to benefit from the maximum charging rate.

Up to 691 Kilometres of WLTP Range

Beyond faster charging, the Opel Grandland Electric lineup continues to offer competitive driving range figures, with the Long Range version targeting drivers who frequently cover longer distances.

The standard Grandland Electric can travel up to 519 kilometres on a single charge, while the Grandland Electric Long Range increases that figure to as much as 691 kilometres, according to the WLTP test cycle.

The larger battery capacity makes the Long Range variant particularly appealing for customers looking to minimise charging stops during longer journeys. Combined with the new 22-kW onboard charger, it also becomes easier to replenish the battery during everyday stops.

Opel has also paid considerable attention to driving comfort. All-electric Grandland variants come standard with Frequency Selective Damping technology, a chassis solution designed to adapt suspension characteristics to different road conditions and driving situations.

The system provides softer damping when dealing with short, sharp impacts, such as uneven surfaces and cobblestones, helping occupants enjoy a more comfortable ride. At lower frequencies, particularly during more dynamic driving, the damping characteristics become firmer, delivering more precise body control and a more direct connection with the road.

The result is a combination of comfort and stability that Opel says remains evident during braking, cornering and high-speed Autobahn driving.

Opel Grandland Electric AWD Delivers 325 HP and 509 Nm

For customers who prioritise performance and traction, the Grandland Electric AWD sits at the top of the electric SUV lineup.

Its dual-motor electric powertrain produces a combined 239 kW (325 hp), while maximum torque reaches 509 Nm. This configuration provides electric all-wheel drive and gives the Grandland a more performance-focused character compared with its front-wheel-drive siblings.

Drivers can choose between four driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and 4WD.

In 4WD mode, both electric motors operate continuously, distributing power to all four wheels to maximise traction, particularly on slippery surfaces. Sport mode, meanwhile, sharpens steering and accelerator responses, creating a more immediate driving experience.

Both Sport and 4WD modes provide access to the vehicle’s peak power and torque, allowing the Grandland Electric AWD to deliver its full performance potential when required.

The combination of instant electric torque, all-wheel drive and 325 hp makes the AWD version the most dynamic member of the Grandland Electric family.

Opel Electric All In Package Adds Charging and Ownership Benefits

Opel is also attempting to make the transition to electric mobility more attractive through its Electric All In customer package.

Customers purchasing a battery-electric model such as the Grandland Electric receive a range of additional services designed to simplify vehicle ownership and charging.

The package includes a Free2move charging pass, e-routes functionality, eight years of mobile charging and breakdown assistance, as well as a battery warranty.

These services are intended to address some of the most common concerns associated with electric vehicle ownership, including access to charging infrastructure, route planning and assistance in the event of unexpected problems.

22-kW AC Charging Strengthens the Opel Grandland Electric’s Position

The introduction of the 22-kW onboard charger represents a meaningful improvement to the Opel Grandland Electric range, particularly for customers who rely on AC charging as part of their daily routine.

Although the benefits depend on access to compatible charging infrastructure, cutting AC charging times by approximately half makes the Grandland more practical and flexible for everyday use.

With up to 691 kilometres of WLTP range, a choice of battery configurations, an available 325-hp all-wheel-drive version and improved charging capability, Opel is strengthening the appeal of its flagship electric SUV.

Rather than focusing exclusively on increasing battery capacity or peak DC charging performance, Opel is addressing another important part of the electric ownership experience: spending less time connected to a charger and more time on the road.
