Mexican police will use Tesla Cybertrucks during the World Cup

Although Tesla Cybertrucks are not achieving the expected results in the market, the authorities in the Mexican state of Jalisco have decided to renew their police vehicle fleet with several examples of this car.

In 2026, the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the World Cup, and preparations have already begun to secure the large number of fans who will arrive in these countries next summer. Therefore, the police in Talisca will receive 678 new patrol vehicles that will be deployed in tourist areas to increase the safety of tourists.

One Cybertruck has already been seen on the streets of the city, as well as two Ford F-Series pickup trucks. Mayor Pablo Lemus Navarro is determined to ensure that security during the World Cup is at the highest level, but the cost has still upset a number of local residents. The Cybertruck is covered in matte black foil with a police livery. It is equipped with police lights built into the front and rear bumpers, as well as sills. There are no photos of the interior yet, but it is likely that it has been modified and equipped with additional police equipment.

At the beginning of the year, Las Vegas also announced that their police received 10 Tesla Cybertruck cars and some of them will be used by SWAT units. It could be an opportunity for the American company to show something positive at a time when their sales are in free fall.

Next-generation Mazda MX-5 could be EV

10 years ago, Mazda launched the fourth generation of the MX-5, and now the Japanese company is working on the development of the next generation, which could be a step into the future. According to Auto Express, Mazda is currently considering offering an all-electric version in addition to the version powered by the new combustion engine.

Auto Express claims that the secret patents reveal an electric-powered MX-5. They envisage a battery located in the transmission tunnel, which is the opposite of the construction of the standard architecture that electric vehicles have. This is not new, as the Lamborghini Revuelto uses the same architecture with a 3.8 kWh battery also located in the transmission tunnel. The car will also have two batteries located behind both seats, similar to the new all-electric Porsche Cayman. There is no information about the battery, but some rumors say that Mazda could opt for a 35.5 kWh battery.

What can also be learned from the aforementioned documents is that the moment of inertia of the steering can be further reduced, because the battery is installed in the tunnel, which allows the center of gravity of the vehicle to be close to the middle. This is a familiar philosophy of the company that has contributed to the MX-5 being more agile and manageable.

Also, the documents show a single electric motor located behind the seats, so it is expected that the MX-5 will retain rear-wheel drive. The new Skyactiv-Z engine is expected to power the next generation of the MX-5 after the current generation is retired, meaning we could expect two different Mazda MX-5 models by 2027.

Zoox recalled 270 robotaxis

Ever since self-driving cars hit the roads, there have been many problems that companies have had to deal with. A few days ago, Amazon recalled 270 of its Robotaxi due to software issues.

On May 8 in San Francisco, an electric scooter driver crashed into an Amazon Robotaxi, after which the vehicle did not stop but continued to move in autonomous mode. Fortunately, the scooter driver, who suffered minor injuries, managed to escape and avoid more serious injuries.

The company recalled all vehicles after the accident and conducted an investigation. Analysis showed that the vehicle, after stopping, could not detect a person lying injured on the road in the immediate vicinity. Therefore, the software would allow the vehicle to continue moving forward because obstacles were not detected.

Software errors are only possible at speeds below 1.7 km/h. The company resolved the problem by updating the software, which was confirmed in simulations, as well as in real-world testing.

Amazon Zoox is currently being tested in several US cities (Las Vegas and San Francisco). The company plans to make the robotaxi available to the public in Las Vegas, as part of a plan to give free rides to select people in exchange for feedback.
