There are many low-mileage cars that have rarely been driven by their owners. They kept them in garages and enjoyed looking at them. However, there are also those who like to enjoy driving their cars like Tom Thalmann who has covered almost 700,000 miles with his Porsche 911 (996) Turbo.
We all know that Porsche 911 models are popular and on the wish lists of many of us, but achieving high mileage is rare. Make no mistake, this car has seen some changes. On Apex Motorsport’s Facebook page, Thalmann’s friend Eric Kaul said: “They removed the engine at 383,000 to fix minor oil leaks and replace turbos, decided to break it down to look at internals, there were maybe two bearings with very light shadowing, rest if the engine was flawless, it was not what we expected to find but were glad when we did! These engines are well built and well engineered. Every valve was mic’d and met factory spec in every dimension, couldn’t believe it.”
According to the statements of most Porsche owners, the biggest problem for the engine, when it comes to high mileage, is the IMS bearings. However, Thalmann does not agree with that, because he only replaced the engine once, even though it was in good condition. It is the result of good car maintenance.
For Thalmann, a vehicle is not just a means of transport that will take him to his destination, it is more than that. It is above all love for the car and enjoyment of driving.
