Nissan closes 7 factories and cuts 20,000 jobs

The crisis in the automotive market, which has been going on for a long time, has left consequences for most manufacturers. One of them is Nissan, which presented a recovery plan that includes laying off a large number of workers. According to company representatives, Nissan plans to lay off more than 20,000 employees in the next two years.

2024 was a bad year for the Japanese company, which sold 3.35 million vehicles worldwide, a slight decrease compared to the previous year (3.37 million vehicles). This contributed to an 88 percent drop in operating profit (472 million) and a net loss of $54.5 billion.

The recovery plan, called Re:Nissan, should bring large financial savings ($3.4 billion), and it is not yet known which regions it will cover. The plan includes the closure of seven of 17 factories and cost optimization in the research and development, marketing, management and production departments.

Last year, Nissan tried to merge with Honda, but the proposal was rejected. Now, Nissan’s new CEO Ivan Espinosa believes that the company needs to change its approach to business and that this year should be a year of transition towards profitability and a better future.

A firefighter destroyed a Nissan 270R by throwing rocks

In 1994, Nissan produced 30 units of the limited edition Nismo 270R, based on the Nissan S14 Silvia. This classic sports car is a collector’s item and recently one was destroyed by a fire department by throwing rocks at the car.

The incident occurred last year when Scolnick, displeased with the retention of rainwater between the fire station and the car owner’s property, hurled several buckets of rocks at a parked car. The owner reported the accident to the police, and the fireman pleaded guilty. The court ordered him to pay $7,973 in restitution.

The owner of the car (Mark Bahna) was selling the car before the accident and now the car is destroyed and he is asking for $500,000 in compensation. However, it is unlikely that he will get the requested amount because realistically the car is not worth that money. It has been modified and has over 130k on the odometer.

The Nismo 270R is powered by a 2.0-L inline-4 engine with 270 hp (198 kW) and 250 lb-ft (338 Nm) of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

Nissan is developing a new all-electric car based on the Renault Twingo

Nissan recently announced that it intends to develop a new car based on the Renault Twingo. It will be an all-electric car, and the information was shared during a call with investors.

The new car will be from the A-segment and will share 80% with the new Twingo. The collaboration between Nissan and Renault will accelerate the development of the car and meet the plan for its launch in 2026.

Nissan will be free from financial obligations under the Ampera project, which plans to replace nickel-magnesium-cobalt batteries with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries to reduce costs and increase range, despite the fact that NMC is more energy-dense. Charging from 10 to 80 percent of capacity is planned for 15 minutes. However, it is currently unknown whether Nissan’s upcoming entry-level electric model will use this technology.

The Ampera project will also allow for a reduction in the development time of the Twingo, from 21 to 16 months. This should also result in lower costs of goods, which would be 40 percent lower than the Renault 5. Although this does not directly apply to prices, it can be assumed that Nissan will choose a price of around 20,000 euros.

When it comes to the powertrain, there is no data for now, and some information suggests that the Twingo could use a 40 kWh battery and a 120 hp engine, like the Renault R5.
