BMW XM Label is the fastest hybrid at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an annual automobile hillclimb held in Colorado, USA, in which BMW entered with the XM Label but failed to complete the climb. It was an infamous attempt for the Bavarian company, which decided to successfully complete the almost 20-kilometer long track in the second attempt. They succeeded in doing so with a time of ten minutes and 48.60 seconds, setting the best time in the hybrid SUV category.

The BMW XM Label is powered by a 4.4-liter biturbo V8 engine combined with an electric motor totaling 738 hp (550 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. It reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds with a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course is 19.98 kilometers long and has 156 turns, and the finish line is located at 4,302 meters above sea level. The car was equipped with a roll cage and behind the wheel was BMW’s sports driving instructor Matt Mullins.

When it comes to SUVs, the record time on this track was set in 2022 by the Lamborghini Urus. Lamborghini achieved a time of ten minutes and 32.06 seconds.

Radford Pikes Peak Edition Type 62-2

The annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is approaching, and one of the cars that will be participating is the Radford Pikes Peak Edition Type 62-2. It is a specially designed car for this race that is completely different from the road legal model.

Ant Anstead and Jenson Button have revived the classic Radford brand, producing something special, a racing prototype designed for high speed and mountain racing. “I know this car is going to be a beast. It has virtually nothing in common with the road car except for a few design features and certain components, but everything else is either modified or adapted from what the road car uses,” Tanner Foust said in an interview with Top Gear. He’s been tasked with keeping this lightweight car on the ground so it doesn’t take off when it races down the famous Colorado circuit in June this year.

The Radford Pikes Peak Edition Type 62-2 is powered by a turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine with 700 hp (515 kW), which is 95 hp (70 kW) more than the road model. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a sequential paddle shift gearbox. The top speed that the car can reach is 268 km/h (166 mph).

The Type 62-2 has an aluminum chassis and a 230 mm wider composite monocoque. The front and rear sub-frames are also new, as is the suspension geometry. The new car features an all-new chassis, front and rear aerodynamic carbon fiber add-ons that make it look like a battle-ready Transformer. Everything is drilled to ensure superior cooling, power and aero performance, while there is a hatch on the roof and a large spoiler at the back.

In the interior, there is only one seat that is placed centrally and meets FIA regulations, and weighs only 3.7 kg. The Pikes Peak Edition weighs only 861 kg, i.e. 200 kg less than the road model. About 70 parts were made using a 3D printer, so check and a light battery.

2023 Alpine A110 Pikes Peak

At the end of June, the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race will take place, in which Alpine will participate for the first time with the super powerful Alpine A110 Pikes Peak.

The specially developed coupe was built exclusively for this race and has already undergone testing at Lurcy-Levis in France, while further testing will be carried out in the south of the country before heading to Colorado Springs for the challenge event.

The A110 Pikes Peak features a two-piece rear wing, a prominent front splitter with large side deflectors, while a central fin sits above the roof hatch that supplies air to the powerful engine. There are deflectors on the sides of the diffuser, which together form part of a larger aerodynamic package that includes a new rear spoiler and redesigned door sills.

This car, weighing only 950 kg, is powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 500 hp (373 kW). That’s a huge amount of horsepower when you consider that the same engine powers the Renault Megane RS, which has 300 hp (221 kW) and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It reaches 62 mph in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 177 mph (285 km/h).

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb track is 19.93 kilometers long and consists of 156 turns. The start is at an altitude of 2,865 meters, while the end is at an altitude of 4,303 meters.
