1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is up for auction

In 1967, Pontiac unveiled the Firebird model, designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang. It was the first generation of this model that had the characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. However, in 1970 Pontiac presented the second generation which was offered in four versions: Firebird, Firebird Esprit, Firebird Formula and Firebird Trans Am. It was produced until 1981 and one of the earlier examples, the 1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is up for auction.

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is powered by a replacement 7.5 L (455 cu in H.O.) V8 engine with 335 hp (246 kW) that was rebuilt by Butler Performance. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an aftermarket Tremec TKO five-speed manual transmission. In 2019, a billet timing set, an Edelbrock intake manifold and 87cc cylinder heads, Ram-Air-style exhaust manifolds, and ARP head studs and head gaskets were installed, while the battery was recently replaced. It is mounted on 17″ honeycomb-style wheels wrapped in Continental Extreme Contact Sport Plus tires.

This copy is finished in blue, has been properly maintained and is in good condition. It is equipped with a shaker hood, chrome rear bumper, white and black center stripes, front and rear spoilers, body-color mirror caps, fender vents, polished dual exhaust outlets, power steering, KYB shock absorbers, and front and rear sway bars, and braking. is handled by a Wilwood master cylinder and calipers along with drilled and slotted rotors.

Inside, the seats are covered in black vinyl that also covers the door panels and dashboard. There’s also a formula-style steering wheel behind which is a five-digit odometer showing 87,444 miles. Additional equipment includes air conditioning, a Holley Sniper EFI touchscreen controller, engine-turned dashboard trim, Pontiac-branded rubber floor mats, and a retro-style digital stereo.

The car is offered with service records, spare wheels, and a clean Missouri title. The auction ends on April 6th and the current highest bid is $59,000 USD.
