Renault sold its stake in AvtoVAZ for 1 cent

After Russia invaded Ukraine, the European Union imposed sanctions, forcing many carmakers to halt production in Russia. One of them was Renault, which even considered restarting production a month later, but backed out. It controlled 30 percent of the entire Russian car market, and now it has been announced that the French manufacturer has sold its share in AvtoVAZ (68%) to the Russian automotive research center NAMI for 1 ruble (1 cent).

It is obvious that Renault has no intention of returning to Russia, and if it were to decide to do so, it would cost them a lot. According to NAMI CEO Maxim Sokolov, the company has invested a lot in AvtoVAZ, so if Renault were to decide to return, it would cost them 112.5 billion rubles ($1.3 billion).

According to Sokolov, Renault invested between $226 and $249 million in AvtoVAZ before withdrawing from Russia, so he believes it would be right for the French to compensate NAMI if they return.

In an interview with TASS, he also said that in 2023, AvtoVAZ NAMI had invested about $311 million. Last year, they invested almost $453 million, and this year they plan to invest another $510 million.

Current relations between Russia and the EU do not indicate that there could be a relaxation soon, so it is difficult to expect that European manufacturers could return to the Russian market in the near future.

Dacia is developing a new EV that will cost around 18,000 euros

Dacia has been the European market leader for years with its most successful and best-selling model in Europe, the Dacia Sandero. However, now the Romanian brand is developing a new model that will cost around 18,000 euros.

In an interview with Autocar, Renault Group CEO De Meo said that the new car will be developed over a period of 16 months, which means it will hit the market in mid-2026. He also said that the company has reached the speed of new car development currently experienced by Chinese companies, after starting a research and development partnership with a Chinese consultancy for the Renault Twingo E-Tech project.

Some are already questioning whether the new model also means that Dacia will soon withdraw the Spring from the market, which debuted five years ago. Dacia has not yet commented on this.

What we do know about the new Dacia model is that it will have similar characteristics to other affordable electric cars currently being developed by Nissan. It will be based on a shortened version of the AmpR Small platform specially developed for electric vehicles. This platform is derived from the CMF-B platform, which is currently used by Dacia’s entire fleet with combustion engines.

Renault Filante Record 2025 – EV that looks like the Batmobile

Renault Filante Record 2025 is a new model of the French manufacturer that once again showed that it is a great designer of electric cars. This single seater looks futuristic and is designed for new records.

The car weighs only 1,000 kg thanks to carbon fiber components, while complex parts that require extreme precision are made using a 3D printer. Unlike its predecessors from the first half of the last century, which were focused exclusively on speed, this racer also stands out for its efficiency in the age of electric vehicles.

The cockpit is equipped with a lightweight seat made of stretch fabric, and can accommodate only one person. Instead of a round conventional steering wheel, the driver uses a pair of handles, while a flexible panoramic screen shows information such as speed and remaining range. There is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, because steer-by-wire technology is used, just like Tesla’s Cybertruck, and the reason for this is to save weight. The same goes for the brakes, which feature brake-by-wire technology instead of a conventional hydraulic system. There’s not even a brake pedal.

As for the powertrain, there’s no information yet. What we do know for now is that the Renault Filante Record 2025 is equipped with 87 kWh battery, located under the seat, using cell-to-pack technology, and weighs 600 kg.

The car will be exhibited in February in Paris during the Retromobile show, before being transported to the wind tunnel for testing. The ultimate goal is to set a new record for efficiency in the next few months.
