1964 Shelby Cobra 289 FIA 50th Anniversary Edition is up for auction

The Shelby Cobra is a sports car produced by the American company AC Cars in the early 1960s. In 1964, Shelby debuted two body styles in the FIA Manufacturer’s World Championship, the Daytona Coupe and the Roadster Cobra. Both were very powerful but not enough to initially dethrone Ferrari. However, they did manage to do so in 1965 when they secured America’s first FIA Manufacturer’s World Championship. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Shelby American introduced the Cobra 289 FIA 50th Anniversary Edition as part of their Cobra Continuation Series. Only 50 examples were produced and one of them, the 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 FIA 50th Anniversary Edition, is up for auction.

The car is finished in Viking Blue, decorated with a white strip that runs the width of the front part and white circles on the hood, rear cover and sides with the number 50. It is equipped with a three-inch “drawn over Mandrel” tube chassis, an original wood-rimmed steering wheel, polished Monza-style fuel filler, Stewart Warner gauges, dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, an FIA-spec rollbar, and side-exit exhaust.

This Cobra is breathtaking but also provides an impressive driving experience for all road racing fans of the last century. It is powered by a powerful 302-cubic-inch V-8 engine which has been stroked to 363 cubic inches with more than 500 hp (373 kW) and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of torque. The engine is equipped with four Weber 48 IDA carburetors, and power is sent to the rear wheels via a TKO 600 Tremec five-speed manual transmission and a Kirkham TorqueTrak differential.

The auction will take place on January 24, 2025 and the estimated value of the car is $200,000 – $250,000 USD (Offered Without Reserve).

1965 Shelby Cobra Replica is up for auction

Between 1962 and 1967, the American company AC Cars produced a sports car, the Shelby Cobra, which over time gained the status of a legend. One example, a 1965 Shelby Cobra Replica, used in the movie “Bad Boys” is for sale.

Bad Boys is a series of action comedy films starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. This car is one of two replicas used for the film and owned by South Beach Classic, a collector car dealership and vehicle rental business for the film, modeling and music industries.

The car was originally finished in red, but within 48 hours it was repainted in Midnight Blue to meet the needs of the movie. It was used in the scene where the French kingpin, Antoine Fouchet was chased by cops Will Smith and Martin Lawrence down the Opa-Locka airport runway. After the shooting, this Cobra Replica was placed in dry storage for 27 years.

At first glance, few would notice that it is not original. This Shelby Cobra is slightly larger than the original. It has a slightly more spacious black interior equipped with a Nardi Torino steering wheel, a Hurst shift lever and an instrument panel placed in the middle of the dashboard.

It is powered by a 351 CI V-8 engine rebuilt in 2023, paired with an FMX automatic transmission.

The car comes with an agreement with Columbia Pictures, signed by their transportation coordinator Larry Crenshaw, copy of one check and the original statement from Columbia Pictures, original Certificate of Insurance from Columbia Pictures, showing certificate holder with reference to the Bad Boys movie, date and insurance amounts, copy of registration made out to Columbia Pictures, and original 1099 form issued from Columbia Pictures to South Beach Classics.

The auction will be held on January 18, 2025.

1965 Shelby Cobra Diamond Edition lighter than ever

Since its appearance in 1962, the Shelby Cobra has gained legendary status, and the 1965 model stands out in particular. The company Classic Recreations made a replica of this model, whose body is made of carbon and weighs only 40 kilograms (88 pounds).

The base Cobra weighs 2,204 pounds (1,000 kg), and how much Classic Recreations will reduce the weight of the ‘Diamond Edition,’ is not known. The Oklahoma-based company will make just 10 examples of this model that can only be used on the track.

Classic Recreations founder Jason Angel proudly pointed out that he learned a lot from the selfless creator of the original Cobra, Carol Shelby (who always insisted on more power in the lightest car) whose signature will adorn the cabin of this replica.

The Shelby Cobra Diamond Edition will be powered by a third-generation Ford’s 5.0-liter V8 engine with 800 hp (588 kW). Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed Tremec T56 manual transmission. The car will be equipped with Wilwood brakes that will ensure safe braking and stopping.

When it comes to price, the Shelby Cobra Diamond Edition won’t be cheap at all. The price is set at 1.2 million dollars.
