Leapmotor suspends investments in Poland

Carlos Tavares was looking forward to a very successful future when a few months ago it was confirmed that the first electric cars from the Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor would leave the factory in Tychy. However, before it even started, everything fell apart because Leapmotor decided to stop investing in the factory in Poland.

It’s a project that Leapmotor was supposed to launch with one of the world’s largest automotive conglomerates, Stellantis, but at the end of last month, the Chinese government called on its manufacturers to immediately stop investing in Europe in response to the imposition of tariffs on their products.

Not all EU members were in favor of introducing additional tariffs on Chinese products, such as Germany, Hungary, Malta, Slovenia or Slovakia, but 10 of them stood by the decision that the new tariffs will protect the European market. One of them is Poland, so China started to take revenge.

In the factory in Tychy, semi-finished products are assembled, and the Chinese company has informed the Polish Trade and Investment Agency that, according to the order of the Chinese Ministry of Economy, it is suspending investments in Poland.

The only model that Leapmotor will produce in Poland for now is the T03, and the first cars will leave the production lines in the coming weeks.

Fiat temporarily stops production of Panda

Earlier this year, Fiat announced that it intends to increase Panda production by about 20 percent in order to meet demand, as data showed that this car is the leader on the Italian market, but also the leader of the A segment on the old continent. However, a few days ago Stellantis announced that it was temporarily suspending production at the Pomigliano d’Arco, Termoli and Pratola Serra plants.

Stellantis’ decision may come as a surprise to those who know that in July this model was the best-selling vehicle in Italy with 63,500 units sold, which is a 21 percent increase compared to 2023. However, those who know what’s going on at the company know that Stellantis recently did something similar at the Mirafiori plant, where the Fiat 500e and Maserati GranTurismo are made.

One of the world’s largest car manufacturers will stop production from November 11, and the reason is tough market conditions. The suspension of production will last for several days.

It seems that Stellantis is in a more difficult situation than it seems, and that difficult decisions are ahead of this group.

Stellantis has a problem with a large stock of unsold cars

Stellantis is one of the largest automotive groups in the world that owns more than a dozen brands. In the first half of 2024, it recorded bad sales results, which caused the problem of too many manufactured cars sitting in warehouses.

The total sales of vehicles from the Stellantis Group in the six months of this year on the United States market fell by 16%, and the biggest decline was recorded by Ram (-26%), Dodge (-16%), Jeep (-9%) and Chrysler (- 8%). A large number of vehicles are gathering dust in warehouses, so the group is considering the option of a lower price on cars manufactured this year or earlier.

Looking at individual models, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is currently the slowest selling car in the US, with an inventory of 617 days. It is followed by Alfa Romeo Stelvio (456 days), Fiat 500e (454 days), Jeep Renegade (332 days), Grand Wagoneer L (327 days) and Dodge Hornet (323 days). This means that brands don’t have to produce these models for more than a year before selling currently unsold stock.

Also, Stellantis decided to reduce the delivery of cars to dealers by the end of the year by 200,000 units.
