VW stops production of ID.3 and Cupra Born

The EU electric car market is currently in crisis and the drop in demand for certain models is causing a reduction in production. VW announced last week that it plans to temporarily lay off 269 employees for a period of 12 months at its plant in Zwickau. It seems that the crisis is more serious than thought because VW is stopping the production of ID.3 and Cupra Born in Zwickau and Dresden.

Due to the current market situation, VW will reduce production during the autumn holidays in Saxony from October 2 to 13 at the VW plant in Zwickau. Production of the VW ID.3 in Dresden will be suspended from October 2nd and will resume on October 16th.

VW faces growing competition, primarily from Tesla and a growing number of Chinese automakers. Taking into account the high inflation and the reduction of subsidies, the competition additionally affects the business of the German brand, due to which there is a reduced demand on the European market of electric vehicles.

Chinese electric cars had a privileged position in the EU, according to the statements of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Therefore, the EU launched an investigation and some members, such as France, have already made decisions to protect domestic manufacturers.

French government considering a new subsidy decree. Citizens with lower incomes will have a subsidy of up to 7,000 euros for the purchase of a new electric car, while for others it will be up to 5,000 euros. This could lead to strained relations with China, and threaten the import of electric cars and small commercial vehicles in the amount of almost 7 billion dollars.

Fully electric VW R model is coming in 2024

At the end of last month, VW announced that it will stop producing R models with internal combustion engines from the next decade. This means that cars like the VW Golf R will disappear and be replaced by electrically powered R models.

In an interview with Auto Express, the head of the Volkswagen R division, Reinhold Ivenz, said that the R models will not be based on the existing MEB electric platform. “We have discussed several concepts in the MEB world and we are not convinced of what we can do with the battery at the moment. If we want a specific MEB R model, it would have to have its own battery, and that is so expensive that we are not currently planning such a car,” Ivenz said.

Although rumors said that ID.3, ID.4, ID. Aero and ID. Buzz could be covered by this decision, it will not happen. So those who want a more powerful crossover will have to wait. However, the good news is that Volkswagen is already working on a new electric platform. “The next-generation electric car platform will allow much more power. The MEB is not that powerful a platform, but we’re not thinking about horsepower, we’re thinking about acceleration. If we want to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds, we’ll talk about how much is the strength needed to make it happen,” Ivenz said.

Volkswagen will show its first R electric concept in 2024, and the production model is expected at least two years later.

2023 VW ID. Aero

After ID.4 and ID.5, hatchback ID.3 and van ID. Buzz, Volkswagen has introduced its new electric model, the ID. Aero. It will be produced in China only for the Chinese market. Next year, Volkswagen will also unveil a version for the European and American markets, which will be produced at the Emden plant, Germany.

The all-electric luxury sedan is Volkswagen’s response to rivals, the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. In fact, the goal of VW is to attract the attention of the upper class of Chinese families with this model. The medium-sized premium sedan has a longer wheelbase and provides plenty of space inside.

The design of the front of the car is something that has not been seen on conventional VW models. Thin LED Matrix lights and a light line that extends the entire length, while the back is a wide light element like the one on the Audi Sportback. The extent to which Volkswagen designers took care of the design is also shown by the air resistance coefficient of 0.23.

VW did not disclose performance data, but said it would ID. Aero have a range of 385 miles (620 km). It will be built on the same MEB platform for electric cars as other models from the VW ID family. When it comes to propulsion it is assumed that it will use the same electric motors available in other VW electric vehicles. It is equipped with a 77 kWh battery and a set of 22 inch wheels.
