VW Magotan only for Chinese customers

In August 2023, Volkswagen presented the new generation of its business sedan, the VW Passat, which will be offered in Europe only as a station wagon. However, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China (MIIT), the German manufacturer intends to soon introduce a new generation Magotan model, the Chinese version of the VW Passat.

The Chinese car market is growing day by day, and Volkswagen is looking to strengthen its position with a car based on the European Passat. However, the designers have also introduced certain changes such as a more squared-off front end, a larger grille and headlights that have thinner lines than the Passat’s.

At the rear, the lights that stretch across the trunk appear to be taken from the ID. electric cars. Also, there are no visible exhaust pipes in the photos. It is not known when the car should hit the market, so we will have to wait for more information.

When it comes to the powertrain, the Magotan is rumored to be powered by a 217 hp (162 kW) 2.0-liter DTJ engine. A hybrid option was not mentioned, so it seems that the car will only be offered with ICE.

The end for the Passat sedan in Europe

The sad news comes from VW. According to Autocar, VW will no longer produce its popular Passat sedan, and Volkswagen has stopped offering this model on its website.

Although the end of production in North America was announced earlier, it seems that the production of Passat sedan in Europe has come to an end. It all started back in 1973 when Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the first model. Since then, eight generations have been produced and marketed as Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat.

The ninth generation Passat will be built on the MQB platform and will only be offered as a station wagon. The plug-in hybrid will be powered by a combination of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 150 hp (110 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm), and a 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine with 187 hp (140 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. There will also be diesel engines with a range of 122 to 250 hp (90 – 184 kW).
