VW to invest 2.5 billion euros in EV production in China

At the end of 2022, Volkswagen lost the title of the best-selling car brand in China, and the throne was taken over by the domestic electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. In order to remain competitive, VW decided to invest 2.5 billion euros in the expansion of the production and innovation center in the Chinese city of Hefei, which will enable 30 percent faster placement of technology and increase the production of their electric vehicles in China.

The German company has announced a series of new models in the electrification of its Chinese portfolio to regain lost share in the world’s largest car market. In 2023, VW invested 700 million dollars in the Chinese car manufacturer XPENG, becoming the owner of nearly 5% of the company, with which it agreed a partnership on the production of two models of this German brand. Both models will hit the market in 2026.

Since the beginning of the year, VW has premiered several new models such as their first all-electric station wagon VW ID.7 Tourer, ID.3 GTX Performance, ID.7 GTX Tourer, Golf R, and ID.Buzz GTX van. Also, the manufacturer discontinued the production of some models such as VW Arteon and T-Roc Cabriolet. The return of some models such as the VW Scirocco, which was discontinued in 2017, was also announced.

VW is discontinuing the T-Roc Cabriolet

VW T-Roc was the third best-selling car in Europe last year with over 200,000 units sold, and Volkswagen plans to launch a new generation of this model already next year. But not the VW T-Roc Cabriolet.

Volkswagen debuted the T-Roc in 2017, and a soft-top convertible version arrived three years later. The new generation will be built on the MQB Evo platform, which will allow VW to add technology such as plug-in hybrid powertrain and adaptive suspension. The same platform will be used by the upcoming redesigned Golf, as well as the new Passat and Tiguan. However, buyers are more hoping for the return of buttons and switches of secondary functions, which were also announced by VW as a novelty for new models.

The new T-Roc will be VW’s last model with internal combustion engines. There is only a small group of buyers for convertibles,” said VW head of development Kai Grunitz.

According to Dataforce, in the 11 months of last year, VW sold 11,693 convertible versions of the T-Roc, which was the second best result in Europe. Only the Mini Cabriolet was better than it.

Growth in demand for new cars in Europe

After the number of new vehicles sold in Europe stagnated due to a lack of components, the latest data shows that the market is starting to recover and at a high speed. According to data, 787,626 new cars were registered in Europe in August, which is an increase of more than 21%.

This period of the year usually records a smaller number of vehicles sold, but despite this, in the eighth month a growth of 21 percent was recorded compared to the same period last year. The biggest growth was recorded in the three largest markets: Germany (+37.3%), France (+24.3%) and Italy (+11.9%), while when it comes to individual cars, the highest demand was for the Tesla Model Y, VW T-Roc and Peugeot 208.

When it comes to electric cars, they recorded a growth of 118.1% (165,165 vehicles), which is 21% of total sales (a growth of 11.6% compared to August last year). The highest growth was recorded in Germany with an incredible 170.7%, while the only country with a deficit was Malta (-22.6%).

Speaking of brands, Tesla delivered over 34,000 cars in August, which is a 242.2% increase compared to last year when this number was under 10,000 cars. The highest demand, the fifth time in eight months, was for the Tesla Model Y with 19,725 deliveries.
