2026 Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE: A Bold Fusion of Heritage and High Performance

Volkswagen has taken a bold step forward in blending nostalgia with innovation, officially unveiling the production version of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE—a high-performance EV that draws inspiration from a cult classic while delivering modern-day driving thrills. Originally showcased as a concept at the 2024 ID. Treffen in Locarno, the overwhelming enthusiasm from fans prompted VW to greenlight the car for series production.

“The response to last year’s show car was overwhelming,” said Martin Sander, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and After Sales. “Many Volkswagen fans expressed a strong desire to see this car enter series production, and we were only too happy to make that wish a reality.”

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is more than just a homage to the iconic Golf II Fire and Ice—it’s a fully realized, forward-looking EV with serious performance credentials.

Electric Muscle: Two Flavors of Performance

Available in two output variants, the FIRE+ICE model offers 210 kW (286 PS) and a more aggressive 240 kW (326 PS), both delivering an impressive 545 Nm of torque. The flagship 326 PS version rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, with top speed electronically limited at 200 km/h—well beyond what most daily EVs offer.

Under the floor sits a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery (net), capable of charging at up to 185 kW at DC fast chargers. That translates to a 10–80% top-up in just 26 minutes, while offering a WLTP range of up to 591 km, placing the ID.3 GTX among the longest-range compact EVs in its class.

For dynamics, Volkswagen equips the 326 PS version with adaptive DCC sport chassis control as standard, while the 286 PS version gets the same setup as an optional extra. Both variants benefit from a standard sports suspension, further underlining the car’s performance focus.

Fire Meets Ice: Design That Speaks in Dualities

The FIRE+ICE badge is more than symbolic—it defines the car’s design identity inside and out. The Ultra Violet Metallic paintwork pays homage to the legendary hue once seen on the Golf II Fire and Ice, while the Flaming Red anodised roof strip and C-pillar FIRE+ICE geometric decal add bold contrast.

Another eye-catching feature: the 20-inch Locarno wheels with red GTX centre caps and high-sheen finishes. Tinted LED tail lights and door-projected fire and ice graphics give the car a dramatic flair both day and night.

Inside, the dual-theme continues. The driver’s side glows in “On Fire Red,” while the passenger’s side cools in “Keep Cool Blue.” Quilted seats, styled after down jackets, feature zippers and FIRE+ICE logos—an unmistakable nod to fashion-forward design.

Collaborating with Style: BOGNER’s Signature Returns

Volkswagen’s long-dormant partnership with premium sportswear brand BOGNER has been reignited with this special edition. Daniel Hiendlmeier, BOGNER’s Managing Director, expressed pride in the renewed collaboration:

“What started as a show car has become a market-ready vehicle that will excite both fans of the iconic Golf II Fire and Ice and a new generation.”

Drawing inspiration from BOGNER’s FIRE+ICE collections, the design teams worked closely to bring high fashion into the EV space, creating a truly one-of-a-kind interior and exterior aesthetic.

Premium Tech, Standard

Volkswagen has bundled a host of top-tier features into the FIRE+ICE edition as standard:

  • Interior Plus Package: Includes premium sport seats with electric massage, AR Head-Up Display, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
  • Convenience Package: Adds 2-zone Climatronic climate control and integrated navigation.
  • Assistance Package: Offers Park Assist Plus, rearview camera, Keyless Access, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Additionally, the 240 kW version can be specced with 235-width performance tyres for even greater grip.

Legacy Meets the Electric Future

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is more than a marketing exercise—it’s a signal of Volkswagen’s commitment to emotionally charged, enthusiast-focused EVs. With its blend of retro-inspired style, cutting-edge performance, and premium detailing, this limited-edition model shows that electric mobility doesn’t have to come at the cost of character.

As Volkswagen continues its push toward electrification, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE proves there’s still room for passion and play in the era of plug-in power.

Freelander Returns in 2026 as Plug-In Hybrid SUV Under New Brand Identity

In a bold move to reset its presence in the world’s largest automotive market, JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) has officially announced the revival of the Freelander name — not as a model, but as a standalone brand. Developed in close partnership with China’s Chery Automobile, the new Freelander will debut in 2026 with a plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV, initially targeting Chinese consumers but with eyes set on global expansion.

From Legacy to New Beginnings

The Freelander name carries weight. Originally introduced under the Land Rover marque in 1997, the compact SUV broke ground as the first Land Rover to use a monocoque platform and played a key role in establishing the compact premium SUV segment. Two generations were produced before the model was discontinued in 2015 and replaced by the Discovery Sport.

Now, nearly a decade later, Freelander returns — not as a Land Rover, but as a fresh brand aimed at a different customer base.

“This new Freelander will echo the original spirit of the model, but brought up to date to appeal to discerning, technologically savvy Chinese consumers,” said Qing Pan, head of JLR China, during a recent investor presentation.

Powered by Chery, Styled by JLR

The new Freelander lineup will be underpinned by Chery’s T1X platform, a modular architecture also used by Chery’s own Omoda, Jaecoo, and core Chery-branded models. This “flexible” platform will allow Chery to produce an electrified range, while JLR will take the lead on vehicle design, infusing the Freelander models with premium British styling and strong off-road character.

The first model is described as a mid-size SUV with chunky off-road styling cues paired with a coupé-like silhouette, drawing comparisons to the Porsche Macan. It will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, catering to China’s rapidly evolving emissions regulations and consumer demand for electrified vehicles.

Strategic Shift in JLR’s China Operations

The Freelander reboot is a strategic play within JLR’s wider plan to revamp its China operations. The Chery-JLR joint venture will replace production of the outgoing China-built Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, both of which are ending production this year.

Importantly, Freelander will be sold through its own Chery-run dealership network, distinct from JLR’s ‘House of Brands’ strategy, which positions Jaguar, Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover as luxury-focused entities.

This separation reflects the Freelander brand’s different market positioning — targeting mainstream, electrified SUV buyers in China, rather than high-end luxury clientele.

Potential for Global Expansion, With Caveats

While JLR confirms that the Freelander SUV will launch first in China, executives have acknowledged “potential for global expansion.” However, bringing a Chinese-built Freelander to Europe or the UK could complicate matters. It risks cannibalizing sales of upcoming JLR models based on the company’s new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform — including future replacements for the Evoque and Discovery Sport.

As such, no European release has been confirmed, and the business case for launching Freelander outside of China will likely depend on demand, pricing strategy, and how well the model resonates with local buyers.

The resurrection of Freelander as a standalone brand signals a significant pivot for JLR in the electrified SUV space. Backed by Chery’s local manufacturing strength and JLR’s design pedigree, the new Freelander is poised to carve out a unique position in China’s fiercely competitive market.

While nostalgia may drive curiosity, the success of this modern Freelander will depend not on its badge, but on how well it meets the needs of today’s hybrid-hungry, tech-savvy SUV customers — in China and, potentially, around the world.

2026 Aston Martin Vantage S: A Sharper Blade for the Driver’s Arsenal

Aston Martin’s relentless pursuit of dynamic excellence takes a bold new stride with the introduction of the 2025 Vantage S—a sharpened evolution of the marque’s acclaimed front-engine sports car. Building on the foundations of the current-generation Vantage, the new S variant is engineered with one clear goal in mind: to be the most focused and exhilarating driver’s car in the Vantage lineup.

Positioned as the performance pinnacle of Aston Martin’s sports car family, the Vantage S follows hot on the heels of the DBX707-based DBX S, reviving a long-standing tradition of ‘S’ suffix models that began with the Vanquish S back in 2004. It’s more than just a nameplate—it’s a statement of intent.

Power Meets Precision

At the heart of the Vantage S lies an uprated version of Aston’s ferocious 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Now churning out 680 PS and 800 Nm, it delivers relentless power from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm—making throttle response and mid-range acceleration more immediate than ever. Thanks to an optimised Launch Control system, 0–60 mph is dispatched in just 3.3 seconds, with 0–124 mph taking a mere 10.1 seconds. Top speed remains a heady 202 mph, but the real story here is in the details.

Engineers have meticulously refined the drive-by-wire throttle map, pedal weight, and response to heighten driver involvement across all drive modes. Every input now feels more connected, more tactile—an ethos that runs deep throughout the car.

Chassis Artistry

The transformation continues under the skin. Recalibrated Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers, revised suspension geometry, and a host of mechanical tweaks combine to enhance agility without compromising ride quality. Aston’s engineers have stiffened the front end for sharper turn-in while easing rear spring aid stiffness to preserve low-speed compliance. A 10% reduction in transmission mount stiffness helps quell unwanted vibrations, improving refinement.

Notably, the rear subframe is now bolted directly to the chassis, eliminating rubber bushings to significantly sharpen steering response and feedback. Aerodynamic refinements—including a new front airdam and rear decklid spoiler—deliver an impressive 111kg of total downforce at Vmax, with front-biased balance for exceptional cornering grip.

Design That Performs

The Vantage S wears its intent proudly. Gloss black or exposed carbon bonnet blades not only intensify visual drama but also channel hot air away from the engine’s “hot-V” configuration. Discreet ‘S’ badging—crafted from brass and finished in red glass enamel—adds a jewel-like touch, while the new rear spoiler makes a bold aesthetic and aerodynamic statement, generating 44kg of rear downforce alone.

An optional 21-inch Y-spoke wheel in satin black, accented with red graphics and paired with bronze brake calipers, continues the car’s racy motif, tying into the red signature detailing of the S branding.

A Cockpit That Speaks in Stitches

Inside, the Vantage S blends artisanal craftsmanship with track-inspired sensibility. A standard Alcantara and leather ‘Accelerate’ interior sets the tone, adorned with satin carbon fibre trim. Each seat bears a painstakingly stitched red ‘S’ insignia—comprising over 2,500 individual stitches—while the Aston Martin wings are optionally sculpted into the leather via a patented embossing and debossing technique applying over 1.5 tonnes of pressure.

Further personalization comes via anodised drive mode rotary knobs in red or silver, colour-matched to seatbelts, contrast stitching, and headrest embroidery, adding cohesion to the cabin’s dynamic flair. For those seeking heightened luxury, the Inspire Sport interior package offers semi-aniline leather and bespoke quilting designed to evoke motion, even at a standstill.

Dynamic Debut at Goodwood

The Vantage S will make its public dynamic debut this weekend at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, a fitting stage for a car so deeply rooted in driver engagement and British performance heritage. Expect it to draw crowds and cameras as it tears up the famous hillclimb—its debut acting as both a declaration and a demonstration of Aston Martin’s engineering ambition.

Available Now

The 2025 Aston Martin Vantage S is available to order now in both Coupe and Roadster form, with first deliveries slated for Q4 2025. More powerful, more focused, and more intricately detailed than ever, it sets a thrilling new benchmark—not just for Aston Martin, but for the entire front-engined, ultra-luxury sports car segment.
