Why do some trucks have wheels that lift?

While driving on the road, you have noticed that some trucks have wheels that lift. This is a common situation with large trucks. If you have been wondering what the reason is, the answer is very simple.

Trucks carrying heavier loads are equipped with multiple axles, because the lifting axle helps to distribute the weight of a particularly heavy load. But when driving without a load, the use of additional axles does not make sense, because more wheels in contact with the road means higher fuel consumption, but also tire wear. In this case, only the drive shaft is used. The whole process of lifting the wheels takes 25 seconds.

In recent years, some manufacturers, such as Volvo, offer a tandem drive axle with the possibility of lifting with 6 × 4 drive, which after lifting becomes 4×2. Volvo states that such a system saves up to 4% in fuel consumption and a turning radius of 1 m. Truck manufacturer Scania AB offers even better results, stating that its axle lift system saves up to 6% in fuel consumption and reduces tire wear.

Last year for Lamborghini internal combustion engines

More and more car manufacturers are giving up internal combustion engines, and this has now been announced by Lamborghini. The news was confirmed by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, who said that this will be the last year in which the only offer will be internal combustion engines, as it will offer its first plug-in hybrid model in 2023.

2021 was a very successful year for Lamborghini when it came to sales, and the best-selling model was the Urus. The company also announced, after the LP 780-4 ULTIMAE, the arrival of a new super sports car that will be the first model in the history of the brand with a V12 engine assisted by electrification.

“The technology is different, it’s a whole new engine, a whole new drive, a new battery, everything is brand new,” Stephan Winkelmann said.

Lamborghini is planned to produce hybrid versions of all its models by 2024, while the all-electric Lamborghini has been announced by the end of the decade.

Baidu DeepWay Xingtu electric truck

Chinese company Baidu has introduced an electric truck DeepWay Xingtu which will be a competitor to Tesla trucks. The truck is equipped with an autonomous system level 4, which could make it able to drive independently in the future, without a driver.

This technologically advanced truck, which stands out in appearance compared to the current offer, has a pronounced rounded design, hidden rear wheels and minimized height, which gives it a look very similar to modern trains. The truck was designed by Pininfarina.

The truck has a 450 kWh battery set that allows a range of 187 miles (300 km). It only takes an hour to fully charge the batteries. It is equipped with 11 cameras, an infrared sensor, five radars and one LiDAR.

Inside, the truck is equally impressive. In front of the driver is a digital cockpit that extends the entire length. Additional screens are placed in the door handles and A-brackets, and a separate screen is placed above the windshield, while the rear seat is similar to those in the car.

Baidu did not say whether and when the production of the truck will start, because the development is still ongoing.
