1957 Porsche 356A Cabriolet is for sale

After the end of WWII, Porsche introduced its first production car, the 356, which was produced in four versions until 1965. In the mid-50s, Porsche started producing the second version of this model, the 356A, which was offered until 1959, when it was replaced by the 356B version with a T5 body type. 21,045 cars left the production line and one of them, the 1957 Porsche 356A Cabriolet is up for auction.

This 356A is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four engine with dual downdraft carburetors paired with a four-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. It sits on chrome-finished 15″ steel wheels wrapped in 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.

The car is finished in black, is well maintained and is in good condition. It is equipped with a Ruetter body, a black soft top with a matching boot cover as well as dual side mirrors, a rear luggage rack with leather fasteners, polished side spears and rocker panel trim, and body-color bumpers with overriders and integrated exhaust outlets at the rear , Koni shocks at the rear and four-wheel hydraulic drums.

Inside, the seats are covered in red leather that also covers the door panels and upper part of the dash. In front of the driver are a two-spoke steering wheel and a five-digit odometer showing 52,076 km (~32k miles). Additional equipment includes belts on the front seats, squareweave carpets covered with black rubber floor linings, Blaupunkt push-button radio and a passenger grab handle, and a gold ASI plate is mounted on the right kick panel.

In 2023, the car was serviced, which included rebuilding the dual carburetors, replacing the fuel pump and cleaning the fuel tank.

This 356A convertible is now offered on dealer consignment in North Carolina with refurbishment photos, import paperwork, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and transferable New York State registration.

The auction ends on April 26 and the highest bid at the time of writing was $50,000 USD.

1956 Porsche 356A European Coupe sold for $239,000 USD

One example of Porsche’s first production model, the 1956 Porsche 356A European Coupe, sold at auction for $239,000 USD. This is an outstanding example of the second version of this model, which was produced from 1955 to 1959, and also a rare T1 “European” variant.

The car won First in Class in the A-Coupe category at the 2013 356 Registry West Coast Holiday in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the previous owner bought it in 2021 at BaT. It is finished in Aquamarine Blue Metallic and really looks magnificent. It is equipped with a single decklid grill, quad taillights with LED bulbs, body-colored bumpers with aluminum guards, European badging, Hirschmann-style red-tip retractable antenna, rebuilt brake drums supplied by Martin Willis Machine Shop of Colorado Springs, and a Koni shock absorbers with a Willhoit Auto Restoration sway bar up front.

Inside, the seats are reupholstered in gray Connolly leather that also covers the door panels, dash and rear bench, with blue square-weave carpets protected by black rubber floor mats. In front of the driver are an ivory-colored two-spoke steering wheel and a reset five-digit odometer showing 6,510 miles (total mileage is unknown).

This Porsche 356A is powered by a 1,883cc air-cooled flat-four engine installed ten years ago during a refurbishment that included the installation of a Competition Engineering machined case, LN Engineering “Nickies” cylinders housing 90mm forged pistons with Porsche 912 connecting rods, dual Weber 44mm IDF carburetors, and 6″ sport air filters and 4″ velocity stacks. Last year, a 12-volt electrical system, Porsche 912 heads with 34mm exhaust valves, Aluminum oil cooler, LN Engineering Torquer camshaft, YnZ’s Yesterday’s Parts wiring harness, Chromoly pushrods, 123Ignition distributor, and full-flow oil filter system were installed. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Porsche 741 four-speed manual transmission.

Along with the car, the new owner received refurbishment records, a copy of the Kardex, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean Arizona title.

1958 Porsche 356A 1600 Coupe Project is up for auction

There are many examples of Porsche’s first production car that have been superbly restored, but every owner wants their car to be personalized. This 1958 Porsche 356A 1600 coupe is exactly what most enthusiasts want, a future project.

The car was off the road for more than three decades, and the current owner bought it 25 years ago. Since then, the car was forgotten, and now it’s time for the future owner to breathe new life into it.

The Reutter-built body was in very poor condition. It was stripped and all removable parts such as floor pans, front and rear seats, trim, lenses, door handles, and bumpers were removed, revealing damage and rust. The windshield and rear window were retained in place. The car features an ivory steering wheel while the removed five-digit odometer reads 38,448 miles (true mileage is unknown).

The car comes with replacement parts such as nose panel, fenders, floors, rockers, Bosch headlights, taillights, rear plate light, refurbished wedge signals, horn grilles, bumpers, bumperttes, overriders, remanufactured exterior badges, wiper blades, fender, closing panels, fender supports, headlight buckets, disassembled chrome window trim, brake drums and shoes, window regulators, front and rear seats, steering wheel, horn button, ash tray, speedometer and tachometer cables.

The Porsche 356A 1600 is powered by a disassembled 1.6L flat-four engine (code 81240), paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. It is mounted on 15″ steel wheels wrapped in 195/65 Hankook Optimo H724 tires.

Along with the car, the future owner receives a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name and copies of Kardex documents that list the factory color, identification numbers, and initial delivery to Hoffman Motor Company in New York.
