BMW X5 v Porsche Cayenne v Range Rover in off-road challenges

New expensive cars in off-road challenges are always interesting, but the guys from Carwow decided that the older models, BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover, show that they are still capable of excitement and are not for the scrapyard.

The BMW X5 is powered by a 4.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine with 286 hp (210 kW) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to all wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Porsche Cayenne is powered by a 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine with 335 hp (246 kW) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. This is the first generation of this model, which has a 6-speed automatic transmission and AWD.

The Range Rover is the third luxury SUV in this challenge, and it is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine with 175 hp (129 kW) and 288 lb-ft (390 Nm) of torque. Power is transmitted to all wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Of course there were some rules. The winner of each race won three points, the runner-up two, and the third-place winner one point. If the car does not complete the challenge then it gets no points, while in the end the car with the most points wins. In the end, the Porsche Cayenne showed the most (14 points), the second place went to the BMW X5 (11 points) and the Range Rover was, shall we say, less successful (10 points).

2023 Range Rover Sport

The British company Land Rover has announced the arrival of the new 2023 Range Rover Sport, which will be built on the MLA-Flex modular platform. The car is currently in the testing phase, covered in camouflage, so everyone is wondering what the new generation Land Rover Sport will look like. That is what they tried to depict in Kolesa.ru.

According to their estimates, the new Range Rover Sport has retained the size of the predecessor, with a standard design. Smaller front grille, narrower headlights, new front bumper, additional side lights, is what distinguishes the front of the vehicle. At the rear, there are new narrow taillights with a contrasting insert between them, an embossed boot lid, and two roof fins like those on the current Range Rover.

When it comes to powertrain, the new Sport model will be offered in four basic powertrain lines that power the current generation Range Rover. These are mild-hybrid inline-6 engines with a power range from 250 to 400 hp (184 to 294 kW), and twin-turbo V8 with 530 hp (390 kW). It will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD.

The new Range Rover Sport is expected in the second half of 2022.

2022 Range Rover finally unveiled

As we wrote earlier, the new Range Rover was unveiled on October 26th. After a long time, one of the most famous luxury SUV models came to its fifth edition.

The new Range Rover is based on the Land Rover MLA platform and will be offered with two wheelbases along which the luxuriously equipped cabin can be configured with four, five or seven seats. Among the details that emphasize the Land Rover tradition are without a doubt the characteristic horizontally divisible fifth doors.

The body of the new Range Rover, without unnecessary details, is adorned with extremely clean lines. This ultimately helped to achieve an impressively low coefficient of air resistance for this type of car. It is equipped with an air adaptive suspension with electronically controlled stabilizers, cameras and a navigation system, through which the car can more easily overcome unevenness on the road.

When it comes to propulsion, customers will have a wide choice. There are primarily turbo diesel and petrol engines as well as two pulgin hybrid versions. One of them is BMW’s 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine with 523 hp (385 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. The same engine is used by the BMW X5 and X7 models. It reaches 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. The engine is paired with an 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission that transmits power to all wheels.

The 2022 Range Rover will enter the battle for buyers looking for their luxury SUVs among models such as the BMW X7, Mercedes / Maybach GLS, Bentley Bentayga, Lexus LX, etc. The first units should appear in showrooms early next year.
