Fall in demand for Chinese EVs in Europe

For years, cheap EVs from China have been flooding the European market, destroying the competition, so the European Union has introduced additional tariffs on vehicles imported from this country, which are paying off. According to the latest data, demand for Chinese EVs has been declining for the past year and a half, and in August it fell by 50%.

For the second month in a row, the market share of Chinese manufacturers has been declining, and the data show that SAIC Motor is no longer the leader in Europe. This was also influenced by MG’s poor sales results (-65% in August), as the brand focused more on hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars. The new leader is BYD, which is one of the few that recorded sales growth (+10%).

According to some analysts, the biggest reason for the drop in sales is the additional tariffs that the European Union wants to impose on Chinese EVs. However, it should also be taken into account that the European market is currently facing a steady decline in the number of electric vehicles sold. Since the beginning of 2024, demand for EVs has fallen by 5.5 percent.

Car manufacturers will face stricter EU regulations on CO2 emissions in the coming year, as the current average emission limit for new vehicles should be reduced from 116 g/km to 94 g/km next year. European car manufacturers have once again called on Brussels to reconsider its climate goals.

Bentley postpones electrification plan for mid-2030

Bentley is another in a series of manufacturers abandoning their original plan to electrify their cars quickly. After Volvo recently did the same, now Bentley is facing reality and putting its focus on hybrids.

Four years ago, the British company announced that it plans to sell only plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles from 2026, and switch to all-electric models from the end of the decade. However, with the arrival of the new Chairman and CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, Bentley is changing its strategy. The new plan is to adopt hybrid technology as a medium-term strategic plan, because in the luxury segment customers still prefer internal combustion engines.

Walliser acknowledged that adoption of EV technology has been slower than many in the industry expected. But unlike other manufacturers that can produce electric and gasoline versions at the same time, Bentley cannot afford to do so.

Bentley is not giving up on electric cars, so the new goal is 2035, when the brand should become fully electric, and the first fully electric Bentley should reach the market in 2027. It will not be an electric version of the existing model, but a completely new car.

All-electric Porsche Cayenne coming soon

In 2023, Porsche revealed a facelift version of its luxury crossover SUV, the Cayenne, and it was announced that the fourth generation of the SUV could be all-electric. Now it’s official.

Photos of the camouflaged car reveal a few minor changes such as large vertical vents on either side of the rear bumper, active vents up front and different light signatures. On the other hand, no major changes are expected in the cabin compared to the current version.

The fully electric Cayenne will be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, which Porsche developed in collaboration with Audi.

The new generation Cayenne will be powered by two electric motors with more than 640 hp. This means it will be more powerful than the current all-electric Porsche Macan, which uses the same PPE platform. It will have AWD, and thanks to the 800-V infrastructure, it will use fast chargers with a power of up to 270 kW.

The arrival of the all-electric Porsche Cayenne is expected by 2026. Also, Porsche has no intention of stopping offering the Cayenne with an internal combustion engine.
