In Sant’Agata Bolognese, where V-12s are treated with the reverence of fine art and downshifts count as musical notes, the idea of building a fully electric Lamborghini was always going to be controversial. Now it’s apparently canceled.

Nearly three years after Lamborghini unveiled the Lanzador concept—a rakish, lifted 2+2 grand tourer meant to preview the brand’s first EV—the company is backing away from the all-electric fantasy. Internally, executives have reportedly come to view the project as an “expensive hobby,” and not the kind that ends with record profits and champagne for shareholders.

When the Lanzador debuted in 2023, it was billed as the dawn of a new era. Production was penciled in for 2028. The message was clear: even raging bulls would eventually graze on electrons. But three years of market analysis, customer feedback, and cold financial math have reshaped that narrative. Lamborghini’s clientele—those who treat naturally aspirated fury as a birthright—have shown what insiders describe as near-total resistance to a model without a combustion engine.

According to CEO Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini buyers insist on an “emotional connection” that, in their view, EVs struggle to provide. Translation: silence is not golden when you’re spending seven figures on a supercar. The bark, the vibration, the mechanical violence—that’s the product.

So rather than push forward with a battery-powered flagship that risks alienating its core audience (and torching margins in the process), Lamborghini appears ready to pivot. If the Lanzador makes it to production at all, expect a plug-in hybrid powertrain—likely centered around a V-8 or even a V-12—pairing internal combustion with electric assistance. In other words, electrons as enhancers, not replacements.

That approach mirrors the broader strategy inside the Volkswagen Group ecosystem. Under the Audi umbrella, Lamborghini must juggle two realities: tightening EU emissions regulations and a customer base that still wants explosions in the cylinders. Plug-in hybrids offer a convenient compromise. They keep the accountants in the green and the tachometer needle happily swinging past 8000 rpm.

The next-generation Lamborghini Urus is also expected to follow that formula before the decade closes, blending a combustion engine with electric assistance to satisfy regulators without muting the brand’s personality. It’s a pragmatic move in a segment where performance SUVs have become profit centers as much as halo cars.

For now, the all-electric Lamborghini remains a concept—literally. The Lanzador may have previewed a possible future, but the present reality is more conservative. In Sant’Agata, they’ve apparently decided that building a silent bull isn’t bold. It’s just bad business.

And if Lamborghini’s customers have anything to say about it, the future will still sound like thunder.

Rolls-Royce’s Next Ultra-Luxury SUV Will Be Electric

Rolls-Royce has never been in a hurry. But when it finally moves, it tends to glide rather than sprint—and its next glide will be fully electric.

Spotted cold-weather testing in Arjeplog, Sweden, Rolls-Royce’s second EV is shaping up to be a battery-powered counterpart to the Cullinan. It’s big, square, and unmistakably aristocratic, and it marks the next step in the company’s carefully choreographed transition away from internal combustion. Think of it as the Spectre’s taller, more imposing sibling—one built not to corner Nürburgring apexes but to dominate ski-resort parking lots in total, whisper-quiet authority.

This new SUV rides on Rolls-Royce’s Architecture of Luxury platform, the same aluminum spaceframe that underpins everything from the Phantom to the Ghost and, now, the Spectre. That’s important, because it means this isn’t some rushed EV conversion—it’s a ground-up Rolls, designed to preserve the brand’s signature ride isolation, vault-like solidity, and cathedral-level cabin quiet. The Spectre already showed that this platform works brilliantly in an electric context, delivering up to 650 horsepower from a dual-motor setup and a 102-kWh battery good for 329 miles of range. The SUV is expected to follow a similar template, though Rolls-Royce being Rolls-Royce, “similar” doesn’t mean identical.

What makes things especially interesting is the BMW connection. Rolls-Royce sits inside the BMW Group, and BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse EV tech—new motors, new batteries, higher efficiency—debuting soon in vehicles like the upcoming iX3 could, in theory, filter into this Rolls-Royce SUV. That would give the brand a leap forward in charging speeds, range, and energy density. The catch? BMW’s Neue Klasse hardware was never designed with Rolls-Royce’s Architecture of Luxury in mind, so making the two talk to each other might require more engineering gymnastics than even a billion-dollar automaker likes to admit.

Still, timing suggests Rolls-Royce isn’t far from pulling the silk sheet off this thing. The Spectre was spotted testing in late 2021, unveiled in October 2022, and delivered to customers a year later. The new SUV appears to be following the same playbook, meaning a reveal sometime in the coming months and sales roughly a year after that. In other words, if you’ve been quietly waiting for a Cullinan that runs on electrons instead of premium unleaded, your patience is about to be rewarded.

The competitive stakes are rising, too. Bentley is preparing its own first EV—an “urban SUV”—set to debut in late 2026. Rolls-Royce beating its longtime rival to market with a fully electric luxury SUV would be a symbolic power move, even in a segment where symbolism matters almost as much as horsepower.

For now, Rolls-Royce is staying tight-lipped, officially “unable to comment on future product plans.” But those camouflaged test mules sliding through the Swedish snow tell us everything we need to know: the age of silent, battery-powered opulence isn’t coming—it’s already here, and Rolls-Royce intends to own it.

If safety ratings were podium finishes, the all-new electric Mercedes-Benz CLA didn’t just win its class—it lapped the field.

In the latest round of Euro NCAP testing, the electric CLA earned a five-star rating and then went a step further, emerging as the highest-scoring vehicle of any brand tested in 2025. Not “best electric compact.” Not “best Mercedes.” Best overall. Full stop.

That’s a bold claim in a testing environment that has grown steadily tougher over the years, with stricter protocols and a heavier emphasis on real-world accident prevention. Euro NCAP now evaluates not only how well a car protects its occupants when things go wrong, but also how effectively it helps prevent accidents in the first place—and how it treats everyone else sharing the road.

Top Scores, Across the Board

Euro NCAP breaks its evaluation into four main categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, protection of vulnerable road users, and safety assistance systems. The electric CLA posted top-tier results in every single one.

That combination is what pushed it beyond category leadership and into overall-best territory. While it naturally leads the “Small Family Cars” segment, its aggregate score was strong enough to outrank vehicles from larger and more expensive classes as well.

That puts the CLA in familiar company. Last year, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class took Euro NCAP’s “Best Performer” title, and now the CLA continues that streak—albeit in a smaller, fully electric package.

Built From Scratch, Not Retrofitted

Part of the story here is that the electric CLA isn’t a lightly reworked combustion-era car. Mercedes-Benz says it was developed from the ground up, and that clean-sheet approach clearly extended to safety engineering.

“We have redesigned the CLA from the ground up,” said Jörg Burzer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG board member and Chief Technology Officer. “This also includes development of the safety features that are part of Mercedes’ DNA.”

That DNA shows up in familiar places: a rigid passenger cell, carefully engineered crumple zones, and restraint systems designed to manage crash forces efficiently. The goal, as always, is to keep injury risk as low as possible if an accident becomes unavoidable.

But modern safety is just as much about avoidance as survival.

A Strong Focus on Prevention

Euro NCAP’s growing emphasis on active safety plays directly into Mercedes-Benz’s long-standing obsession with driver assistance technology. The CLA’s standard safety suite includes systems designed to detect hazards early, support the driver in critical moments, and intervene when necessary.

“Our ambition is to not only protect occupants in a Mercedes-Benz, but all road users,” said Prof. Dr. Paul Dick, Director of Safety and Accident Research at Mercedes-Benz AG.

That philosophy matters, because vulnerable road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and others—now account for a significant portion of Euro NCAP’s scoring. The CLA’s strong showing in this area suggests its sensors, software, and braking systems work cohesively, not just for marketing bullet points but in test scenarios meant to mirror real-world chaos.

Context Matters—and Timing Too

The CLA’s achievement lands at an interesting moment for Mercedes-Benz. In 2026, the company marks 140 years since the invention of the automobile. Over that history, Mercedes hasn’t just chased performance or luxury; it has repeatedly turned safety research into production technology, often well before rivals followed suit.

From early passive safety concepts to modern driver assistance systems, many features that are now industry standards made their public debut wearing a three-pointed star. The electric CLA doesn’t introduce a single headline-grabbing invention, but it shows how far that accumulated expertise has been refined.

This isn’t safety as an add-on. It’s safety as a system.

The electric CLA’s Euro NCAP performance won’t make it faster or flashier, but it does something arguably more important: it reframes expectations for what a compact, electric Mercedes should deliver as standard.

Being the safest car in its class is impressive. Being the safest car tested in an entire year is something else entirely.
