Mercedes disappointed with the results of the electric G-Class

When Mercedes launched the PHEV version of the AMG C63, expectations were high. It was thought that customers would easily accept electrification, but the data suggests otherwise. According to Handelsblatt, Mercedes management is disappointed by the demand that is far from expected.

In the almost one year since the premiere of the electric G-Class, Mercedes has sold only 1,450 hybrid units, while in the same period of time 9,700 units with a combustion engine were sold. And while Mercedes spokespeople claim that sales of the electric G-Class are going according to plan, one of the bosses who justifiably asked to remain anonymous told Handelsblatt: “People want a real G-Class, and it is still powered by V6 or V8 engines”.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 469 hp and 650 Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. The PHEV version is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a rear-mounted electric motor producing a total of 680 hp (500 kW), mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all wheels.

It is clear that the wealthy clientele still prefers the standard version with a clean combustion engine, whether this will remain the case in the future remains to be seen.

Kia records sales growth in April

Few companies can boast of sales growth, and Kia is one of them. According to published data, in April the South Korean manufacturer achieved a sales growth of 0.5 percent worldwide (274,437 units), which is a good sign that the company is successfully holding up under pressure from Chinese automakers.

51,005 vehicles were sold in the domestic market, which represents an increase of 7.4 percent compared to the same period last year. The highest demand was for the Sorento models (8,796 units), Carnival (7,592 units), and Sportage (6,703 units).

Among all-electric cars, customers chose the EV3 model the most, which took the title of World Car of the Year for 2025. The EV3, along with the EV4 sedan that will soon arrive in Europe and the Tasman pick-up, is the manufacturer’s main hope this year. Thanks to them, Kia managed to achieve sales growth worldwide and also boost sales of SUVs that were the leaders in sales. The Kia Sportage was the best-selling with 47,737 units, followed by the Seltos with 25,543 units, and the Sorento with 23,855 units sold.

In order to maintain and strengthen its position in the market, in March Kia presented the EV2 Concept, as a new step in its Opposites United design philosophy. This model should help achieve the set goals, as the company announced that it will be one of the most affordable all-electric crossovers on the market with a price of around 30,000 euros.

Volkswagen ID.4 was Europe’s best selling EV in January

Although 2024 was full of challenges and uncertainties in the automotive industry, car sales on the old continent grew by 0.8% (10.6 million), compared to 2023. However, the beginning of 2025 did not continue on that path. In January, 1.9% fewer cars (993,068 units) were registered.

If we look at individual brands, Volkswagen is the leader with 112,000 new vehicles sold (+17 percent compared to January 2024), which is an outstanding result because second-place Toyota sold only 69,966 units. It should also be noted that other brands, such as BMW with 59,859 vehicles sold or Skoda with 58,959 registrations, had a successful start to the year. Skoda could even overtake the Bavarian manufacturer by the end of 2025.

Volkswagen’s biggest assets were its ID models, such as the Volkswagen ID.4, which became the best-selling electric car in Europe with a growth of almost 200 percent, leaving behind the Tesla Model Y. As for other models, the Volkswagen ID.7 came in third with a growth of 657 percent, while the KIA EV3 finished in fourth place. Among small electric cars, the Dacia Spring achieved good results, which was seventh, and the new Renault 5 in eighth place.

The biggest loser was Tesla, with only 9,913 units sold, which is 45 percent less than in January 2024. This was mainly due to Elon Musk’s controversial statements and lower demand for the Model Y.
