Bentley postpones electrification plan for mid-2030

Bentley is another in a series of manufacturers abandoning their original plan to electrify their cars quickly. After Volvo recently did the same, now Bentley is facing reality and putting its focus on hybrids.

Four years ago, the British company announced that it plans to sell only plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles from 2026, and switch to all-electric models from the end of the decade. However, with the arrival of the new Chairman and CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, Bentley is changing its strategy. The new plan is to adopt hybrid technology as a medium-term strategic plan, because in the luxury segment customers still prefer internal combustion engines.

Walliser acknowledged that adoption of EV technology has been slower than many in the industry expected. But unlike other manufacturers that can produce electric and gasoline versions at the same time, Bentley cannot afford to do so.

Bentley is not giving up on electric cars, so the new goal is 2035, when the brand should become fully electric, and the first fully electric Bentley should reach the market in 2027. It will not be an electric version of the existing model, but a completely new car.

Mercedes designer Bruno Sacco passed away at the age of 90

A few days ago the world of automotive design lost one of the most important automotive designers ever, Bruno Sacco. For four decades he was one of the main designers of Mercedes-Benz, where he created a series of iconic models of this brand.

He was born in 1933 in Italy and after completing his studies in mechanical engineering, his first job was at the renowned Ghia and Pininfarina carrozzerie (coachbuilders). Unfortunately, he was not successful, so he moved to Germany and got a job at Daimler-Benz in 1958, where he stayed for 41 years. He worked on body development before being appointed head of body design and dimensional concepts. During this period some of his works included the 600 (W100) and the 230 SL aka “Pagoda” (W113). In addition to production cars, this talented designer also experimented with concepts that had rotary engines and “gullwing” doors such as the C 111 and C 111-II models.

In 1975, he was appointed head of the design department, and his first project was the W123 T-Modell, the predecessor of the E-Class station wagon. It was the brand’s first station wagon, and Sacco also created the S-Class W126 and its elegant derivative the C126 coupe. Also, during the 1970s, he was responsible for the design of the famous G-Class.

Neig’s work also helped the company attract a younger generation of buyers primarily with the 190 (W201), the forerunner of the C-Class. He is also responsible for the A-Class that arrived on the market in the late 1990s. Before retiring on March 31, 1999, the last cars he designed were the W220 S-Class and the C215 CL.

In his long career as a designer, he remained attached to one car in particular, the Series 126. “The Model Series 126 in all its design forms is the best thing I have done for Mercedes-Benz,” said Bruno Sacco.

Mansory Pugnator based on the Ferrari Purosangue

Mansory is one of the best tuners of luxury cars and supercars, and even the best sometimes make a mistake. That could be said of the company’s latest work based on the Ferrari Purosangue, the Mansory Pugnator.

In September 2022, Ferrari revealed its first SUV, the Purosangue, with which the Maranello-based company sought to attract first-time buyers and younger people. However, Mansory has focused its work more on those with deep pockets. The Pugnator (a name derived from the Latin word for “competitor”) is equipped with a Vermillion Red carbon fiber bodykit, which includes larger intakes on the front bumper that significantly increase downforce on the front axle, wheel arch extensions, fender vents, massive side grilles and fake rear door intakes. At the rear, there is a massive diffuser with four exhaust pipes, a rear grille and a massive rear wing. There are also plenty of fins, creases and air intakes, giving the Pugnator a muscular look.

The interior is upholstered in ivory leather with contrasting red details and carbon inserts. The seats, armrests and door panels have a new perforated pattern, while aluminum pedals, quilted floor mats and Mansory badging are fitted. Also, the tuner offers numerous customization options.

When it comes to the powertrain, Mansory increased the power of the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine to 755 hp (555 kW) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque by remapping the ECU unit, installing a new exhaust system with flap control and sports catalysts. That’s a significant increase in power compared to the Purosangue, which has 715 hp (526 kW) and 528 lb-ft (716 Nm) of torque. The car sits on new 22″ and 23″ FC.5 one-piece forged wheels wrapped in high-performance tires.

The price of the Mansory Pugnator is not known.
