BMW had a better start to the year than Audi and Mercedes-Benz

According to Automotive News BMW has taken a commanding lead in the European executive car segment, with the 5 Series outperforming key rivals from Mercedes-Benz and Audi in Q1 2025.

Between January and April, BMW sold 20,402 units of the 5 Series across Europe—an impressive 56% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Notably, over 60% of buyers chose the Touring wagon variant, highlighting strong consumer preference for practicality alongside luxury.

In second place, Mercedes-Benz recorded 15,811 sales of the E-Class, up 19% year-on-year. Audi followed with 13,774 units of the A6 sold, marking a 10% increase over the previous year.

Electric variants are also gaining traction. BMW’s i5 electric model posted strong growth with 8,843 units sold—a 55% jump. It led the premium EV sedan segment, followed by the Audi A6 e-tron (7,460 units) and the Mercedes-Benz EQE (3,740 units).

When it comes to powertrain choices for the 5 Series, buyers are nearly evenly split: plug-in hybrids and diesels each accounted for 30% of sales, while pure electric models followed closely with 27%. Traditional gasoline engines made up the remaining 11%.

Although this generation of the 5 Series debuted just two years ago, BMW is already preparing a redesign—continuing the brand’s tradition of staying ahead of the curve, even amid strong sales momentum.

2002 Audi RS4 Avant sold for $175,000

Between 1999 and 2001, Audi produced the B5 version of the RS4, and 6,030 units rolled off the production lines. One of these, a 2002 Audi RS4 Avant, recently sold at auction for $175,000.

The car was imported to the United States as new and modified to meet local regulations. It is finished in Avus Silver Pearl Effect and is in very good condition. Compared to the S4 station wagon on which it is based, the RS4 has widened wheel arches along with revised bumper covers, grilles, doors, side skirts, roof rails, a rear wiper, and twin exhaust outlets. Interestingly, Audi never offered this version in the United States.

Inside, heated and electrically adjustable Recaro sports seats are upholstered in black leather with debossed RS4 logos on the backrests. In front of the driver is a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a digital odometer showing 11,242 kilometers (~7k miles). Additional equipment includes automatic climate control, cruise control, a Bose sound system, and an Audi Symphony CD/cassette stereo linked to a six-disc CD changer that is mounted in the rear cargo area.

Under the hood is a 2.7-L V6 engine that, thanks to two Borg Warner K04 turbochargers, has 375 hp (280 kW) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque, which is enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with an electronically limited speed of 250 km/h. Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transaxle and a Quattro all-wheel drive system with a Torsen center differential.

2026 Audi e-tron GT

After the previously revealed Audi e-tron GT S and e-tron GT RS, the German manufacturer has introduced a new edition of the all-electric e-tron GT, as a response to the Porsche Taycan.

At first glance, it seems that Audi has decided not to change much because the new e-tron GT shares a lot with its previous models. What the company has tried to improve is to increase the power of the two electric motors, which now deliver a respectable 503 hp and 590 Nm of torque. With launch control activated, the power increases to 585 hp. This is enough for the 2,254 kg e-tron GT (30 kg lighter than the e-tron GT S) to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 245 km/h.

The car is equipped with a 97.0 kWh lithium-ion battery that allows a range of up to 622 kilometers (WLTP). The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes on powerful superfast chargers (320 kW), and a ten-minute charge will provide a range of up to 285 kilometers.

Speaking of price, the Audi e-tron GT will cost 108,900 euros in Germany, which is more affordable than the Porsche Taycan 4, which costs 107,300 euros.
